In LALD, shortly after Bond has met Rosie Carver, she is terrified into spending the night with him (ie, in the same bed, rather than the other one she'd planned on) by a little black top hat with a white feather in it. I've searched all over the internet, and I the only top hat I can find is Baron Samedi's white one. Can anyone help me find out what, if anything, the mini hat means?
PS- it's also mentioned in the book: something about a population that could be scared by a little black hat. Haven't got the book to hand, but I'll put an exact quote later (when I find it!)

Why it's just a hat, darling, belonging to a small-headed man of limited means who lost a fight with a chicken.

It's a warning: get it out of here!
But a warning of what?
But a warning of what?

The curse of Baron Samedi : death...

I always thought it would be cool if we had The Man with the Golden Gun before Live and Let Die, so when that crops up, it could be a reference to Nick Nack.

The curse of Baron Samedi : death...
Apparently, Baron Samedi wears a white top hat in Haitian Voodoo, and that's what confused me: he's the only top hat-wearing Loa I can find any reference to anywhere on the internet.
PS- still looking for that quote!

Good point...But i think it's a connection between him and his curse...A warning : get out or you'll die.
But maybe it's a joke without connection with the real Voodoo cult this hat...

I was a bit off with that quote. Page 56 of the new Penguin edition:
I know that the Nick Nack-sized hat has a little feather in it, and I also know that one of the other Voodoo Loa likes his worshippers to burn black chickens, but that is all I know.
Thanks to everyone who's tried to help.
You're all great people
Bond reflected it was no wonder that the Big Man found Voodooism such a powerful weapon on minds that still recoiled at a white chicken's feather...
