I watched NSNA when it came out about 5 times in the theatre trying to love it like I did his other Bond films. It never happened. 13 years later he makes The Rock where he basically plays James Bond but who got caught in his prime (like he did in all of his other Bond films) but in this outing was kept in prison for 30 years until he was needed to save the world (San Fransisco). I like The Rock better than NSNA and it was a bigger hit at the theatres and I wonder how many people have seen that and never seen NSNA? I consider it his last Bond film. Do any of you?

no. Connery played a character named John Mason in The Rock, not James Bond.

Seriously I do see your point and there are similarities to Mason and Bond.

Funny you should say that. I was talking to Sharpshooter today and I said that I honestly saw The Rock as Connery's swan song. For some reason, The Rock has something really bondian about it. I was thinking of making a fan trailer using the QoS theatrical trailer music but I couldn't be bothered.

When I first watched The Rock, I was waiting for the injoke Bond reference to pop up but it never did. When Nicholas Cage talked to him about his past as a British secret agent, I was waiting for him to say, "something like James Bond?", and then have Connery give us that familiar raised eyebrow.

The Rock has nothing to do with the Bondmovies.

But of course, Connery's character is obviously a reference to his days as Bond.

I like both films. As a film, I think I like The Rock better. It was Connery's last really good performance in tha type of role.

I read an article at the time( I forget which mag ) Connery told the producers "hey, I can be James Bond without being James Bond". You are right, it has nothing to do with Bond movies technically, but it has everything to do with them in an alternate reality.

Funnily enough, I once met someone who seemed to be under the impression that THE ROCK was a Bond film. For real, I mean.

Personally, I see (the superior) ENTRAPMENT as Connery's final "Bond" outing.

That was pretty good too. I forgot about that one. The original director wanted it to be a bigger type action film I think but Connery wanted a smaller film for whatever reason. I remember reading about a scene of a robbery from a moving train or something like that.

The Rock IS Sean's final 007 flick. I mean if you didn't wrote the "real" name of his character above, who here would remember it ? Less than 1% of the guys here, but we all remember Sean as being "like Bond".

His given name was a technicality. Sean was Bond in the Rock, and it ROCKS !

I have no idea what the name of the characters Sean Connery plays in Medicine Man or Family Business are either, that hardly makes them Bond films.

I don't find The Rock particularly Bondian personally, there's a distinct lack of elegance, or anything remotely refined for that matter. A fun movie certainly; an archetypal late-90s actioneer.

Funny, but I thought the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was his last Bond movie.

When I was a kid I was sure Sean Connery REALLY was James Bond - therefore every movie he made must have been a Bond movie.

The posters said Sean Connery IS James Bond. I mean, if that wasn't a big enough clue, what was?

I know it was made before NSNA... but since I loathe NSNA, I would consider the brilliant The First Great Train Robbery as Connery's last "proper Bond" outing. He's quite schplendid in it...

"The Rock" and "True Lies" are the best Bond movies of the 90's.

I know what you mean. Early on in my life it was hard to separate him from that role.

I greatly enjoy that film and even when I'm watching it for the umpteenth time, I am still waiting for the film to make a Bond reference.

But Sean's character itself is a Bond reference. Kind of alternative continuum Bond who got caught and locked up for 30 years.

How about, "But of course, you are."?

Seriously, I agree with Safari Suit. It's a geat action movie, definatly one of my favs, but it's no where near a Bond movie. (I wish it could be)

Here it is bottom line. John Mason should have been Bond. It actually helps to make other things make sense. That would support the idea that every new actor who plays Bond is actually a different person and the name "James Bond" simply comes with the title of 007. This also would explain the timeline issues with Judy Dench as M when Daniel Craig gets the job. However, John Mason is not James Bond. Although all the timelines make sense, and he even acts like Bond, Mason tells Ed Harris that he was a Captain in the British Army and Bond was in the Navy. If he had been in the Navy "The Rock" would be what is called a spiritual sequel. I wish it was but it's not.

I loved the Rock! Michael Bay at his best.

I never got why people get this impression that it's different people with the same name in the movies. Does different actors playing Bruce Wayne mean Batman's a different guy?

You're point would be valid if Judy Dench had not been in Casino Royale. She got her job in GoldenEye and Bond was already an established Agent.
