It is obvious that QoS is inspired by earlier Bond films, such as GF (read below), TSWLM (Bond chooses to let the guy fall from the rooftop) and LTK (the bad guy gets away thanks to a rotten apple in the intelligence service, Bond motivated by revenge, South America, climax in the desert, etc). But is good old Goldfinger the biggest inspiration of them all? I have been looking for some connections:

In both GF og QoS the villain's first name ends on -ic:

GF: Auric
QoS: Dominic

Both villains have last names that make us think about a colour, and both colours say something abouth their intentions (to a certain extent, at least):

Auric Goldfinger: gold, plans to control the access to US gold reserves.
Dominic Greene: green, the colour that symbolizes environment and ecology. Dominic Green wants to control the water, the most important ingredient for all life in our environment.

Strawberry Fields poses like Jill Masterson, but covered with oil instead of gold (unfortunately, this scene didn't work for me at all)..

Aston Martin is definitely back. I know it didn't start with QoS, but it looks like it has come to stay. GF was the first 007 movie featuring this car, and the scene where Bond asks Q about his Bentley is quite a classic.

Do people agree? Or are these similarities just coincidents? Which other Bond movies do you find in Quantum of Solace?

You could also add that in both GF and QOS

-Felix has a partner
-One of the girls in both films is after revenge
-MI6 is able to track Bond wherever he goes (by the homer/cellphone)
-Bond "fails" early on in the film (by Jill being killed/Mr.White escaping)

Great, thanks! and a little comment on this one:

-One of the girls in both films is after revenge

True! And in both films, she is revenging her family, which we also see in FYEO, with Melina.

I'm sorry, but I think that's one of the most specious arguments I've ever heard.

I tend to agree with Capt'n Tightpants on this one... If we go this way:
Golfinger / Carver (or Stamper)

Please, don't take seriously, Daylights's post, he's just a Craig hater, here's (with subtlety) trolling about.

The similiar scene with Fields posing like Jill didn't affect me at all. The first time I saw that scene in GF with Jill it was really a great moment. Seeing it done again for QoS not so much....it would have been better if they did something different with her death.

I think there are more parallels to LIcence to Kill and The Spy Who Loved Me than there are to Goldfinger, as obvious as those references are.

Maybe it's The Spy Who Loved His Licence to Kill?

The OP write this on the thread "Favourite Bond Imitator":

"I don't enjoy it, but Daniel Craig does a kind of a Bond impersonation in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. The man himself, as well as the movies, don't remind me very much of Bond, but you can still see he is trying. He drives an Aston Martin, travels the world and has a licence to kill. He even calls himself James Bond in these poor movies!"

This is how you can find out that Daylights is trolling here.

What are you talking about? That's not a specious argument, let alone a superlative example of one. A specious argument at least has the appearance of truth.

So, Mr. Arlington Beech, are you not able to keep different posts apart? Because you didn't take me seriously in the post you refer to, you don't take me seriously in other posts either?

To all the others - thanks for replies. I wasn't trying to fool around, I just pointed out a few things I feel that GF and QoS have in common.

And Mr. Arlington Beech, I have to ask you this question as well: what do this topic have to do with my feelings concerning Craig??? Does it reflect my hate or love for any actors at all? I kept actors out of this one, all I asked about were films.

I'm not really buying the ending in ic thing or the color. There's also Alec Trevelyan in GoldenEye with, you guessed it, a 1964 Aston Martin that was also also featured in TB, TND, TWINE and CR. And during some of QoS's oil pipeline dialogue, I thought, "Oh, The World Is Not Enough again?"

There's 26 letters in the alphabet. After two dozen Bond movies, some are going to repeat. Not that they weren't trying to reference Goldfinger, but some of this is coincidence.

What a lazy, rubbishy thread this is.....

I've another link between the two films. Both titles have an "n" in them. Now that's spooky...

I think a CBN bus needs to be hired to come round people's houses and take them out a bit more...

That would be allowed. But a person of the opposite sex has to sit inbetween each CBN member and has every permission to unzip those fanoraks and have a much needed fumble.

Fair point. Who would keep a record of the commercials inbetween the televised Bond movies if they all went out...

Jim, Zorin, are you guys not being perhaps a tad---- well, harsh? :(

I mean, this is a Bond fansite, last time I looked (and in spite of my best efforts to turn it into a forum for Stallone obsessives). If "Daylights" - whoever he or she may be - has spotted some similarities to GOLDFINGER in QUANTUM OF SOLACE and feels the need to share them in order to provoke further discussion, surely it's all just part of CBn's rich pageant, no?

I mean, how is it different to, say, yours truly noting, the other day, a probable reference in QUANTUM OF SOLACE to Werner Herzog's AGUIRRE: THE WRATH OF GOD, or wondering out loud to my fellow CBners whether or not Bond knocks on Mathis' door with his knuckles rapping out the James Bond Theme? Do I deserve to be pilloried and pitied? Okay, don't answer that one, but instead ask yourself this: how is it different to, say, Jim reviewing Fleming's THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and finding all sorts of interesting things in the novel to wave in front of our noses, or---- I dunno, craigroolz21 or whoever starting a thread called "Listing All the Locations in the Craig Films" or something? It's all just fannish fun, surely? It's not as though Daylights has created the 52nd thread about, ooh, I dunno, "Bourne-like elements in the Craig era" or "Craig's looks - are they suitable for 007?". :)

Thank you; shame you didn't spot my little trap, that these undoubtedly true observations and statements of purpose from a respected and erudite member must give me carte blanche to create my "James Bond Carpets" thread that I've been waiting 7 years to do. Watch this space!

You did rather walk into that one, I'm afraid.

Do I deserve to be pilloried and pitied?

Dangerous question, Looby-Loo. Not so much whether you'd like my answer, but more how and when.

Oh, hang on. I think that one's already been done. Twice. :(

What time is the bus coming? This all sounds very exciting and I'd hate to miss out.

But Loomis has a good point. This is anorak central anyway so if Daylights wants to make a case, good on him/her. I don't think that in this instance there's much there. Other than the very obvious girl-on-bed reference I just don't see it (and "ic" thing - come on!). The TSWLM reference is not a reference - watch 22 Bonds and he's killed people the same way on many occasions. In GF alone, he electrocutes people twice! So GF is copying.....GF?

Look hard enough and you can find references/homages, what ever word you want to use, in any two random Bond films. It really should be a forum game! I'll get things going:

NSNA & CR - Both Felixs are black! And both villains have expensive yachts and blonde girlfriends! OMG!!!!

There is a big difference between fandom and boredom. Referencing matching letters in characters names is bordering on an OCD and not even one that makes a sense. There is fanboy fun and their is fanning the fires of mediocrity....

Talking of which...
