Hi

I know there is a thread on the BR/DVD CR SE.

But this is kind of an emergency.

I just got my copy from Amazon (U.S). My DVD player is region 1. The discs are region 1.

And the menus on disc 2 & 3 are in Chinese or Japanese!!...anyone has any idea? The same happened to my new copy of FRWL, on the second disc.

Simply solution would be to check your player's language settings, there should be a setting that says "Menu Language" (or something similar), usually the player default will be disc default, but change it to English. That should work, if not, call either Amazon or Sony Pictures' customer service.

Yeah, I already did that....this is the first time I run into something like this.....I wrote Amazon, and I read online that some of the Ultimate Edition JB DVD's are defective(ie Japanese menus on R1 copies). :(

Your player's language setting won't do anything for the DVD menus. It will only change the language of the player's internal set-up menus. I do remember seeing an issue or two raised when the UE DVD's came out but haven't read anything on this type of issue with Casino Royale. I would return your set for a new one. It was probably mispackaged at the factory. The set I have has all English menus.

Yes, I did have the same problem, but it can be fixed.... don't ask me how, 'cause I couldn't tell you, what I do is push (almost randomly) Display, 0 & Return Titles buttons in my Phillips remote control, and miraculously the problem is solved, as soon as I push play to enter in the 'second' menu (the one with all the documentaries).

However, it doen't bothered me that much this problem, because I also have the CR Collector's Edition on BR.

1) It's Japanese.

2) I can read some stuff like Main Menu -> Casino Royale -> Something about Ian Fleming -> Something about Bahamas -> Somethng about Ian Fleming again.

3) Ask for your money back.

Yeah, I think that's what they did (mispackaged both). And they did it on both the UE of FRWL and the 3 disc CR edition. I can't believe this. I was so sad this morning.....good thing is that it's only on the special features discs (on CR disc 2&3)(on FRWL disc2)...the main feature discs are all in english...that would have really killed me.

Yeah, this afternoon I did something similar...I hit menu/setup/ play, twice in a row, and the menus changed to english! But I just tried that again 5 minutes ago, and no luck this time. It' s pretty weird.

They just wrote me back offering to exchange it for a new set, the problem is that there is no way for Amazon to verify if the discs are all in line. After all the box is in English, and it's a region 1 case. Doing research online today I read of more ppl with the same problem. The Japanese menus. More so on the new UE's, but I found one more person with the same CR problem.
That's too bad that Sony is doing such a lousy job on TQM.

Ok guys, here is the answer....

My DVD player, which is R1, was unlocked somehow. Since I never had problems playing any of my movies before (including other Bond movies), which are all R1, I figured there was nothing wrong with it. And there really isn't. The problem is:

THE COPY PROTECTION SONY/MGM/WHATEVER IMPLEMENTS ON SOME OF THEIR DVD'S.

Regional Coding enhancement(RCE) is an additional layer of protection which some studios have placed on select REGION 1 DVDs to prevent them from playing on region-free or multi-region players.

http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html

Q: Do MGM Titles have RCE?
A: We got the scoop from MGM about RCE. At this time MGM is not adding RCE to their titles and do not plan on adding RCE to future titles. However, one of their Japanese Manufacturer decided on their own accord to develop an RCE 'like' encoding process and add it to some MGM DVDs. When MGM found out about this they told the manufacturer to stop it immediately, which they did. So the first pressing of some MGM titles pressed from their Japanese manufacturer does have an RCE like encoding. But re-pressings of those titles and all future titles should NOT have RCE.

What really pisses me off is that my DVD player came as R1.

Thanks Captain :)

I went over to a friend's house, and the special features discs of CR and FRWL that were giving me problems played well on his old Sony DVD player (meaning that the menus are in English if I use his player). I have an LG. Still there is no excuse for these discs to be troublesome in any way. They do play well on my BenQ DVD drive as well. I guess I will need to use my PC to watch the special features. And Thunderball (2disc) is on its way today, since I ordered before I knew something this dreadful could happen. Funny thing is that these purchases were all double dips for me, since I already own most of the Bond films on DVD. I wanted to get the extra features of the UE's & the CR3DE, hence the double dips. Well after this, no more 2 disc editions for me.

Quick Question for anyone: I'm pretty sure that I'm getting the three disc edition of CR for Xmas. I've heard rumours that the disc with the actual movie doesn't work unless you have a Sony/blu-ray player.
Can someone let me know please?

The info you found on the Regional Coding Enhancement makes sense, bondrules. Doesn't make it right but it makes sense. If you have ever authored a DVD, other languages don't just appear in the menu structure unless you put them there which is exactly what they did. :(

The three disc version is the standard DVD Collector's Edition of Casino Royale. I have a Pioneer Elite player & it plays fine. You may have read about some issues with the Blu-ray discs on a few of the older Bond titles not playing correctly due to the lack of firmware updates for those players (which has since been fixed). Those discs played fine in the PS3 from the beginning but some manufacturers took a few weeks to get updates out because they got the information too late in the process.

Thanks a lot Professor Dent! I only asked because I read on Amazon that there was some sort of issue with the first disc of the CR 3-disc edition. Thanks again! :)

Seems like problems with these discs is sort of "standard operating procedure" these days. :(

In the end I was forced to strip the special feature discs of their japanese menus the old fashioned way. I'm not going to say how, but you can guess.

Now my CR discs 2&3, and my FRWL UE disc 2 MENUS are all in English. This is b/c the Japanese menus were layered on top of the R1 English menus. Once you take out the first layer of menus, the second layer shows, which is what I was looking for. I didn't get 100% quality on them, but I did get 83%, which for DVD extras, I can live with, and most importantly, all my menus are in English and I can navigate the DVD's like a regular human being......

Lesson learned.....no more UE discs for me. This is the price I pay for double dipping, and giving big studio honchos more of my hard earned cash on purchasing the same movies for the extras, just b/c I'm a fan?
I wasn't going to buy a Sony DVD player, return the discs to hope they come as they should when there is a strong chance they might not, and certainly I wasn't going to ditch my LG DVD player, which works flawlessly with every one of my 100+ DVD's collection and the dozens of other DVD's I have rented.

Exactly, why would you stoop to watching a DVD when the Blu-ray release is light years better.

I cannot wait until the Bond Blu-ray titles come with the ability to add your own audio and video commentary tracks like with TDK Blu-ray :(

I thought I would be fine watching upconverted DVDs on my BD player, but actually I cannot stomach standard definition after getting used to high definition and I am steadily replacing DVDs I already own with their Blu-ray counterparts :)

I agree on the quality of Blu-ray. I also own the collector's edition because I wanted the packaging, and because I had a Best Buy reward card for which I got it for like $5 or something. I compared both versions of CR and there was no comparison, the Blu-ray owned it.

Anyway, even the upconverting on standard DVDs doesn't do that much, IMO, so I can identify there as well. I don't know about replacing all my titles I have on DVD, but believe me I will with many of my favorites that merit it, especially if the price is right. Blu-ray will spoil you that way.
