Personally I don't like cliffhangers, I think they're a little bit cheesy (I know that Fleming use it on some of his novels, but anyway).
The thing is I don't see any cliffhanger at the ending of CR, IMO the scene between Bond and MR. White is a mild happy ending (after Vesper's death), becuase finally OO7 is achieving his first professional triumph, capturing a important person in a criminal organisation, who can gives clues about how destabilize it. But in some forums I read that many fans took that finale as a cliffhanger.
What are your thoughts??

Eon were quite deft about this, because it is and isn't a cliffhanger. Enough loose ends were left hanging for Quantum of Solace to pick them up and create a follow-up that serves as an extension of Casino Royale's storyline.
That said, Mathis' fate was probably Casino Royale's only genuinely unresolved storyline, and thus, the only one that truly warranted resolution. But it was terrific to see Bond really get to the bottom of Vesper's betrayal.

Yes, but Mathis is just a secondary character, his fate it's not really essential for CR's plot.
I think CR finale, could be no more than some kind of open ending, not really a cliffhanger.

The thing is they probably didn't know at the point of writing/filming that QoS was going to be a sequel. Don't forget back when DAD was in production that they planned for DAD to start a continuing storyline, with Damien Falco being a recurring character and that didn't work out, so I guess they got cautious from that.
I did find it a cliffhanger. What was Bond going to do with Mr White? In fact, at that point I was asking, who is Mr White? We knew so little about him and his organization at that point.

I find the term "open ending" to be far more accurate than "cliffhanger".
With an open ending it means that they might follow-up on the plot or not. Perhaps CR's ending might be now considered a cliffhanger, but only due to the nature of QOS.
