I read a number of "professional reviews" prior to taking in the first screening of QoS (opening day is noted as vacation as soon as the date is known), and the reviews were mildly to full blown I-hate-this-movie negative. Not a good start to the day.

I liked it. Not as much as Casino Royale, but I liked it. Especially after the first half hour or so. I thought the first two action sequences were badly edited, and hard to follow. I'm not a fan of the title song, and I thought the opening credit sequence was weak - again, maybe the way it was shot contributed to it. My 18 year old son didn't think the women were well defined enough. Once the action moved to South America, it got a bit better.

I knew the movie was going to be dark, but at points it was (and this as been mentioned before) downright cruel. The way Mathis is treated made me think they had gone too far down the "blunt intrument" path. Perhaps if Bond had explained to Camille why he did what he did, I would not have seen it (in my opinion) as an act bordering on desecration.

The same can be said of the demise of Agent Fields - it took me a minute to remember what she had done to deserve her fate - a bit more time could have been spent on that scene (especially seeing as this is the shortest movie in franchise history).

So what did I like (here are the spoilers)? I think they did a good job of tying up the loose ends from Casino Royale. The Vesper arc is done; the necklace in the snow and the gunbarrel sequence were at the end of the movie for a reason. Now they can go whatever direction they want (hopefully without invisible cars and space lasers). I think we will see the return of some mild gadgetry, Q and Moneypenny in the next one.
