Well, I'm speechless, but not in a good way. I just saw QOS and I have to say that I was bored and disappointed. As a Bond fan like so many of us, I never, EVER thought I would say that. Of course I felt the same way with the second half of Die Another Day. Keep in mind, I thought the only good thing about this film was Daniel Craig's performance. I'm sorry and I know many of you are tired of hearing this, but seriously, I felt like I was watching a Bourne knock off. I felt I was watching a movie that just happens to have a character in it named James Bond. I know Bond is a spy and assassin and turing him more gritty is fine, but I felt like we were missing that Bond class. The editing was so abrupt through out that I found myself getting angry and frustrated. I know that he was suppose to find his "solace" in this film, but really, what was the point of this movie?!?! I actually had thoughts about getting up and leaving. Me! A Bond fan walking out?!?! The title song AND the title sequence were terrible and an annoyance. The only good thing about it IMO was that MK12 brought back the naked ladies, but I didn't feel we saw enough of them. Please Daniel Kleinman come back!!! Call me a traditionalist, but I pray to God that the gunbarrel will be back at the beginning of Bond 23! I heard a few people in the theatre yelling, "where is the gunbarrel?" as the film started, and when it came at the end, people where already up and leaving. I saw no point at all for it being at the end, whether or not he has become the "James Bond we know and love" . Well you know, we've heard that before. He was suppose to be the James Bond we know and love by the end of Casino Royale. Is he still not going to be James Bond in Bond 23? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! If this is what EON is going to be be doing from now on and making these films like QOS, I'm sorry, but I'm out. I guess I will have to be happy with Dr. NO to Die Another Day. I will be waiting for Bond 23, but as of now, my expectations are very low.

How can you be happy with "to Die Another Day." Are you rejecting CR then?

And, are you saying that you're disappointed because there isn't

a) a pre credit gunbarrel;
:( more vodka martini ordering;
c) perhaps some fine art recognising?

While I agree with you on most of your points, I cannot agree with your conclusion. QOS has such a layered story and tells it in such a great way. Some corrections, and it would have been perfect.

Well said. In fact, there is no point to QoS. The movie ends pretty much where we left off at CR--with neither Bond nor us knowing anything more about Quantum...and with Bond having taken no steps toward becoming The Bond We All Know and Love. As a matter of fact, Bond's regressed from the mesmerizing character we got to meet in CR into a charmless, expressionless thug whose tough guy expression came from a can at Sears Roebuck.

In CR Craig nailed the part. Here, thanks to Forster, he holds it down with Stuporglue while his mind is elsewhere.

I think in the next movie Dodge, more about Quantum will be made clear. I think we're all left to understand that we cannot know everything about a secretive organization in the fitting of just one movie.

To paraphrase M, when you start to read negative reviews and find yourself shouting "Nonsense" at the laptop screen, its time to go... :(

Agree with your review for the most part, though I did prefer Casino Royale to Die Another Day.

We know the organization is named Quantum.
We know the identities of several, apparently, senior members.
We know Mr. White is apparently higher up than we initially believed - and clearly a smart dude.
We have now seen two detailed plots involving the organization.
We have an idea how far their power reaches.

Just because Bond didn't break into their headquarters, read all their computer files, and then blow the place up doesn't mean we know nothing. We know considerably more about Quantum now than we did about SPECTRE after two films (cinematically - of course, those who've read the books are ahead of the game).

And as far as Bond being the same mindset, how do you figure? At the end of Casino Royale, he's absolutely shaken and seething with anger from a tragic shock. M tries to impart some "wisdom" to him over the phone about Vesper's true intentions. And he hangs up on her.

Because he doesn't even want to hear it. Can't believe it's true.

Then, he finds her phone message and goes after White. The film isn't about vengence - "they" didn't kill his girl, she killed herself. He just needs to understand why. Hindsight is 20/20 for the viewer - we now know that Yusef is in on the game. But Bond sure didn't for the first hour and 42 minutes of Solace.

That's the answer he was searching for. The fact that Yusef is in on it with Quantum and clearly still up to his old tricks is SUPPOSED to be the shock of that final scene. Of course, we're all so heavily spoiled on message boards and the character/scene have been so publically depicted that we all knew it was coming. I should stop there, I don't want to speak for others. Maybe you didn't. I did.

QoS is all about Bond going from a state of shattered denial to a mindframe of cold acceptance. He's matured, essentially. He's become the Bond that we know in the sense that he doesn't see injustice as a personal front, anymore. He's come to expect it. Connery's Bond never would have pissed and moaned about Vesper's death - because he was the Bond Craig has BECOME by the end of QoS.

That's my reading of it.
