2008 was a big year for Bond with four new original adventures (I'm including the last Moneypenny book as a 'Bond' adventure...just cause). So now that we've experienced them all, it's time to choose a winner. Which was your favorite new Bond adventure of 2008? And which was your least favorite?

(I've put this in the QOS forum just so it will be seen.)

My favourite: QUANTUM OF SOLACE

My least favourite: DEVIL MAY CARE (my biggest Bond disappointment ever)

Mind you, I've yet to check out BY ROYAL COMMAND and FINAL FLING.

QoS was, I guess, something of a disappointment in its way, insofar as it failed (IMO) to match up to the amazing standard of CASINO ROYALE. However, I did enjoy QoS on the whole, and certainly didn't find it an utter suckfest like DMC.

"By Royal Command" is my favorite and "Devil May Care" is my least favorite. But I have to confess I haven't read "Final Fling" or any of the Moneypenny books.

Although I liked "Quantum of Solace" overall, I think it has some of the same root faults as "Devil May Care." In each case you have a "serious" artist taking a crack at Bond and not understanding what makes him work. Sebastian Faulks botches it entirely (well, he got the food right), and Marc Forster is lucky to have Daniel Craig as his star. Craig saves "Quantum of Solace," but I suspect it would have been a much better film with a less idiosyncratic director.

What a brilliant year this has been as a a Bond fan. I have enjoyed every book, film, novel, and audio but it's a close race between Quantum of Solace, Final Fling and By Royal Command
In order of merit

1. Final Fling. Superb book that I could not put down. I loved the way she wrote Penny ,M, Tanner and most surprisingly Bond. tense,,exciting, sad, beautiful, lovely, heartwarming, heartbreaking...
2. By Royal Command. What a way to finish. This series has been surprising from the start , especially in how adult it has been. Some of the sequences have been R rated. This novel doesn't hold back and shows Bond as a nearly grown up. Brilliant.
3. Quantum of Solace. Pay attention 007. You need to do this to enjoy the new film. Watching it a second time and everything becomes clear. Destined to become a classic in the mould of OHMSS.
4. Devil May Care. Such high hopes but such an average novel. It was brisk but offered nothing new.

Best: Quantum of Solace. Quite possibly the best of the Bond films, which is more than enough for it to be the best of the new Bond adventures this year.

Worst: Devil May Care. Very disappointing. Interesting premise, but something just didn't quite work.

Great topic, zen, but you didn't share your votes!

I'm inclined to agree with pretty much every word of this post, with the possible exception that Quantum of Solace will be viewed as "a classic in the mould of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service" - only time will tell on that one.

In any case, The Moneypenny Diaries: Final Fling gets my vote for the best Bond adventure of 2008 for all the reasons you outline. I'm very surprised to see it get five votes for the worst Bond adventure of 2008 - I wonder whether those who voted accordingly have read the book?

The worst, unsurprisingly, is Devil May Care. High expectations aside, it's the biggest missed opportunity in the Bond canon since Diamonds Are Forever.
