Hi all,

I'm the type of guy who normally watches movies with the subtitles on as English isn't my first language.
One of the things I'm planning to do is to watch QoS again tomorrow, but in the mean time perhaps you guys can help me with the following plot clarifications.

1. What was Felix and the other agent in the plane doing talking to Greene? Are they undercover?

2. Why was Felix 'demoted' and then 'promoted' again at the end of the movie?

3. What was Gemma's role in the movie? Just to call Bond in? Was she sent by M to do anything else? There was a scene where she was walking up to Greene ... to..?

4. During the concert when members of Quantum were talking to each other via their ear-sets, what were they talking or planning for?

5. How does the other members of Quantum contribute / help in the coup de tat of the Bolivian government?

6. Is Mr White the head of the organization? If not, who is he?

7. Which agency was Vesper's boyfriend, the Algerian, part of?

8. When Bond was at the pre-concert party, he was looking down from the mezzanine floor to the registration area where a man came by to receive an entry kit/paper-bag. How does Bond know he is part of Quantum?

Thanks in advance ..

No, if you're reading this by mistake and haven't seen the film, I strongly advise you not to continue, 'cause the following is beyond spoiler.

No problem :)

1. What was Felix and the other agent in the plane doing talking to Greene? Are they undercover?

They're not undercover, they "collaborate" with Greene, closing their eyes on the coup he's plotting in Bolivia, as long as they can secure the oil resources of the country for the US. Hence the comment about sleeping with the bad guys by Leiter after Greene's gone.

2. Why was Felix 'demoted' and then 'promoted' again at the end of the movie?

He didn't appreciate the methods of his superior, Beam (the moustache). He refused to ID Bond when Greene showed his picture on his mobile phone, feigning not to recognize him, then helped Bond in the bar instead of having him arrested. When Beam was revealed to have had bad intuitions about Greene and his plans, he was sacked, and Leiter got the job as head of South America department.

3. What was Gemma's role in the movie? Just to call Bond in? Was she sent by M to do anything else? There was a scene where she was walking up to Greene ... to..?

No, she's a simple clerk at the embassy, not a proper field agent. She was sent to put Bond back in a flight to London as soon as possible. She got trapped in a game bigger than she thought... About her walking up to Greene, I think you're talking about the party? In fact, she just comes with Bond, for no particular reason other than keeping him company. At some point, when Camille finds herself in a bad position, Bond comes up to Greene, and Gemma helps to by "unintentionally" dealing with Elvis.

4. During the concert when members of Quantum were talking to each other via their ear-sets, what were they talking or planning for?

They're talking about the coup plot planned by Greene in Bolivia. He tells he needs 2000 km of pipeline, they agree, and then they talk about transferring funds, and how the Americans will react, and Greene says they won't care about yet another dictator in South America, if they can get some profit from that. Or something like that.
Then Bond interrupts, saying: "If I may offer an opinion, you guys should think of a better place to meet", or something along those lines :(

5. How does the other members of Quantum contribute / help in the coup de tat of the Bolivian government?

I think it's a matter of funding. Maybe there's something else, but I don't remember.

6. Is Mr White the head of the organization? If not, who is he?

We do not know who's the head of Quantum.

7. Which agency was Vesper's boyfriend, the Algerian, part of?

Quantum. He makes a profession of seducing women working on the fringe of the intelligence world, like Vesper, to have them trapped and secure their cooperation with Quantum. Once they're in love with him, he disappears, then Quantum pretends they have abducted him and threaten to kill him if the girl doesn't cooperate.
By the way, this guy is ugly, I wonder how he can be such a ladykiller!

1. They're representing the CIA, in co-operation with Greene, and happy to enable the change in Bolivia in exchange for stability in the region and the promise of oil.

2. I don't recall him being demoted. His promotion comes after Greene's plan is revealed - Beam likely took the blame internally for putting the CIA in bed with the guy, and Felix was next in line.

3. Agent Fields' job is to ensure Bond leaves the country in the morning. She's not specifically working for M, just a low-level staff member in the local MI6 field office. She heads up to the stairs in case Bond requires any social support - and, no doubt, to keep an eye on her job. But she cannot blow their cover, and wisely stays silent and pretends not to know Bond when he walks away.

4. Several things - the corruption of a Canadian agent is mentioned (a reference to the ending), and they debate whether the Tierra Project (Greene's water stockpiling in Bolivia) is worth Quantum's time. It is decided that it is, and that more pipeline is required.

5. In no ways that we see, though we are promised that members of the organisation have been working to destabilise the government in readiness.

6. We don't know yet. I believe he's just a member - he is, after all, a hands-on assassin in Casino Royale.

7. Quantum.

8. They are giving out two different tote bags - on the table are bags for guests, so why is the girl giving certain people bags from under the table? Bond can't be sure, but it's certainly suspicious - there must be something different bags. What he finds leads him to Quantum.

Hope that helps.

1. What was Felix and the other agent in the plane doing talking to Greene? Are they undercover?

No. The CIA were conspiring with Quantum - more willing to look the otherway, really - because with Medrano in power in Bolivia, the United States could get more oil out of the country.

2. Why was Felix 'demoted' and then 'promoted' again at the end of the movie?

Leiter was promoted because Beam got himself fired.

3. What was Gemma's role in the movie? Just to call Bond in? Was she sent by M to do anything else? There was a scene where she was walking up to Greene ... to..?

Fields was a local operative in La Paz. M most likely worked out that Bond would go to Bolivia, and so alerted her as to his imminent presence. The scene at the party was probably either Fields floating around, or trying to flirt with Greene for informtion.

4. During the concert when members of Quantum were talking to each other via their ear-sets, what were they talking or planning for?

They are planning their operations in Bolivia: to seize control of the water supply. They'd probably want everything in place before Medrano took over to stop him from getting too big a head and thinking he didn't need Quantum anymore.

5. How does the other members of Quantum contribute / help in the coup de tat of the Bolivian government?

They don't. I think we'll find Quantum's modus operandi is to have one man like Greene working as Quantum's arm, so if things go badly, the damage is minimal.

6. Is Mr White the head of the organization? If not, who is he?

We don't know; all we've been told is that he's a high-ranking member.
Spoiler

7. Which agency was Vesper's boyfriend, the Algerian, part of?

He works for Quanum. He's a honey-trap: he lures female agents like Vesper and Corinne Veneau in, profeses his love for them and basically manipulates them into doing Quantum's bidding.

1. What was Felix and the other agent in the plane doing talking to Greene? Are they undercover?
No, they are just making a career.

2. Why was Felix 'demoted' and then 'promoted' again at the end of the movie?
He slept with good people.

3. What was Gemma's role in the movie? Just to call Bond in? Was she sent by M to do anything else? There was a scene where she was walking up to Greene ... to..?
She had a sexy walk. They need another reason to put her in the movie?

4. During the concert when members of Quantum were talking to each other via their ear-sets, what were they talking or planning for?
Don't care about that. It was just a nice opportunity for the director to show his exclusive taste. Remember, he's not workman class.

5. How does the other members of Quantum contribute / help in the coup de tat of the Bolivian government?
This nasty little organisation planned the whole thing. The idea to DOUBLE the price on the water bill was invented by the leader himself.

6. Is Mr White the head of the organization? If not, who is he?
It was a sequel. He had to come back.

7. Which agency was Vesper's boyfriend, the Algerian, part of?
He worked for a special branch in Quantum. They are seducing brunettes with Algerian loveknots before kidnapping themselves. That's what the "A" in Quantum stands for.

Thanks in advance ..
Your welcome.

Guys, thanks so much for those plot explanations .. the movie is clearer to me now ..

I have 3 more question, something that wasn't clear to me since Casino Royale,

1. So was Mathis a villain in Casino Royale? In what way? How was he associated with Quantum?

2. Was Mathis' new life in QoS funded by M16? Why?

3. Le Chiffre didn't have 'bigger than life' plans (like Greene's coup and stealing of resource). His plan was simply to make money for Quantum. Was he like a 'financier' of the organization?

1. He wasn't at all associated with Quantum, but LeChiffre tried to suggest he was. He remained a suspect at the end of the film, but was cleared by the time QoS begins.

2. Because they tortured a long-standing member of their company. The house was compensation when he was found to be innocent.

3. More a private businessman with ties to Quantum. The organisation serves their own interests when recommending him to people - it's good for everybody.

Can I just ask, why did Bond and Camille rent the plane? Where were they headed?

I believe that was the initial plan, yes.

I'm surprised actually that I haven't seen more criticism of the fact that despite the enemy intervention, Bond and Camille fortunately stumble across the sinkholes/underground reservoirs and even more conveniently parachute into one.

Didn't he try to double-cross Quantum and make some money on the stock market for himself before returning the money to Quantum oder did I get that wrong?

The project was 'the land'. It was the area Greene bought up. What Bond and Camille eventually discovered was that the 'project' was underground - the siphoning of water, the stockpiling.

I'm surprised actually that I haven't seen more criticism of the fact that despite the enemy intervention, Bond and Camille fortunately stumble across the sinkholes/underground reservoirs and even more conveniently parachute into one.

Well it is what they went out there to find. If they had't stumbled on it, they'd have stayed out there (or gone back) until they did.

I file this in the same folder as "finding Dimitrios' ELLIPSIS text on the first security tape you watch". Sure we could have waited for Bond to check a dozen discs, but it's an acceptable short-cut for the sake of minimising the shoe-leather.

3. Le Chiffre didn't have 'bigger than life' plans (like Greene's coup and stealing of resource). His plan was simply to make money for Quantum. Was he like a 'financier' of the organization?

Well the double-cross was of Obano and his organisation, really. Seeing as it began life as their cash.

Can someone tell me what this dialog means when Bond was cradling Matthis before he died:

Bond, "why did you decide to help me?"

Matthis, "it takes a lot to admit you are wrong"
