Too many nouveaux riches, I suppose. A shame for the beluga species.

That bit (quotation from John Pearson ) comes as a total surprise to me:
“The idea of Ian (Fleming) being a sophisticated good liver was nonsense” (...) “He really didn’t know anything about wine, and he didn’t know how to mix a good martini. All that stuff about ‘shaken not stirred’ — that’s typical Ian; a clever journalist. ‘Shaken not stirred’ — ah, good phrase.”

Now, his insistance on Champagne makes sense to me... I've always regarded Champagne as a very overrated wine, the one people who don't know anything about wine will drink, just because it is supposed to be good (and since it's expensive, it must be good). For many people, Champagne goes with celebrations like mistletoe goes with Christmas and New Year's Eve. God knows how many bottles of awful Champagne are forced into the stomach of guests for many celebrations!
