A question that I've had for a long time (I don't know if there's another thread for this)...

Which Bond movies are the ones that Connery stars wearing a toupee (or at least some kind of hairpiece), or is he using a wig in all of his films as OO7??

For all his films? No way. For DAF? Yes.

Connery wore some form of hairpiece from Goldfinger onwards. It was Hitchcock who advised him (or told him, knowing Hitchcock) to wear one in Marnie which was made between FRWL and Goldfinger. His hair in Dr No and FRWL was grown long at the front and greased back over his head. If you look at Connery in The Hill which was made just before THUNDERBALL you can see he had hair but it was getting very thin.

This really should be listed under FAQ. I tried searching for the previous thread on this topic but no combination of "Connery", "toupee", "hairpiece", "hair" or "piece" would bring it up. He's worn a toup in every Bond film he did. It started with a small piece in Dr.No, and the piece got larger in every successive film.

Yes, I thought so, but I wasn't sure about that. I notice that in some of the promotional photos for Goldfinger, I mean in the meetings with fans, not in the official stills, Connery looks a middle part hairdo, with what it's seems only his natural hair. He looks prety much balding than in the movies there, but I don't really know how was his hair two years earlier for the filming of Dr. No.

In that legendary Barbara Walters interview he clearly states he wore two pieces for DR NO. Also, there is somewhere a great shot of him being tailored for, I believe, FRWL sans hairpiece.

Yes, that is a great shot Mr. Somerset. I remember that photo as well, I also read he wore a small hairpiece from Dr. No onwards. Although for the first 2(DN and FRWL), they were just to fill in the hairline.

His hair looks very different in Dr. No and FRWL. I've seen Marnie, and his hairstyle there is like that in Goldfinger, but a little different. I've seen pictures of him during the YOLT shoot, and he wasn't bald yet, just somewhat receded.

The version I heard was that when Connery showed up for work on Goldfinger, Cubby was shocked at how far the hairline had ‘receded’ since Marnie. When Connery explained that Hitchcock had made him wear a hair piece it was insisted he should continue wearing one as Bond.

No idea if that’s true or not.

Just to throw this in, I watched the new Dr.No Blu-Ray last night, incredible picture quality, so much so that you can literally see Connery's scalp in some parts. I first noticed it in the Moneypenny scene, as he walks across the office towards her we see his head from behind, and bam, there it is.

Yes, as has been stated, SC wore some form of hairpiece in all his Bond movies, and they got progressively bigger as time went on. For his first three movies, he is obviously wearing fairly small frontal pieces, whereas in TB onwards it is much larger, and in a way it defies continuity with DN, FRWL and GF in that it shows Bond with more hair than he had on his previous missions.

On a side note, at one point I thought that DC may require a piece to help him in his later movies, but that now seems unlikely. His obvious receding seems to have stabilised somewhat over the past two years.

Great photo - thanks for the link. SC had less hair at 36 years of age than I imagined.

He always refused to wear hairpieces when not acting, yet in this photo he seems to be a attempting a rather ill-advised and pointless combover. I would have thought that either you

a. wear the piece
or b. you let the baldness shine through.

SC seems to have gone for a disasterous third option.

I wouldn't go as far to say that he is rocking a comb-over in that picture. Her still had some firepower up there. It is neither pointless nor ill-advised. He was merely working with what he had at the time.

Think I mentioned before, that Connery's toupee must have been great support for Craig in the torture scene in Quantum of Solace. :(

From hairpiece to codpiece - with love. :)
