When Greene says "My friends call me Dominic", Bond's reply of "I'm sure they do" is a cheeky way of drawing attention to the fact that Greene has just stated the blindingly obvious. Because what else would friends of a man called Dominic Greene call him other than Dominic?

That seems a bit literal to me.

The expression "My friends call me (insert christian name)" is a common one, it's Greene's way of saying "you can call me Dominic". Surely, as others have said, Bond's response is a snarky way of saying that he has no interest in getting pally with him. As in "I'm sure your friends do call you Dominic; I, on the other hand, will call you Greene/Naughty Man/Bum Features etc"

Well, that's one interpretation. Mine is another. I guess we'll just have to wait to see the film.

I have a feeling the film won't clarify the comment. Either way, Bond's taking Greene down a notch.

"My friends call me..." is a very, very well-known expression. (It's even been used in Bond films previously!) It doesn't make the speaker look stupid for stating the obvious at all. It's just the way people talk. The secondary meaning - the subtext - is one we're all familiar with - it's a version of "Call me Dominic." Hence the Bond line suggesting he won't.

People don't speak in a literal way. Screenwriters use that. Telling everyone in a thread that they're getting it wrong while you have the joke sussed...well, that way lies serious risk of embarrassment!

If the screenwriters wrote in a literal way (as stated by sorking) would make the line-reading and movie as a whole sound staler than a 6-year old piece of matzah. (That's a very rigid unleavened bread for all who don't know.)

I disagree.

Never once in my 33 years have I ever heard anyone reveal their Christian name with the line "My friends call me....", and never have I done so myself. One would not do this unless one was being humourous. If done with a straight face, there would be the strong possibility of looking like a self-important stuffed shirt.

Yes, "My friends call me...." is, as you say, a very well-known expression, but I don't think it's one I've ever encountered outside books and films. Obviously, QUANTUM OF SOLACE is a film, and, as you indicate, people in films don't tend talk exactly as they do in real life. Especially not people in Bond films, which are hardly known for their realism.

However, I still don't see that my interpretation of this exchange is impossible, and I've conceded that it's possible to view it another way. As I've said, we'll just have to wait for the movie.

I think it was me that asked the question in the first place and I feel a bit daft now Somehow, just the words on the page made no sense to me. But of course, the meaning is blatantly obvious, and I'm sure I'll feel doubly daft when I hear it in the film.
