In the PTS of GoldenEye, Bond and Alec are on a mission, Alec tells Bond to set the timer for 6 minutes. When Alec is captured, Bond quickly changes the time to 3 minutes, why does he do this? By changing the timer on the mine, he has just given himself less time to get out alive. It's quite strange when you think about it, before Alec was 'killed', Bonds plan would have probably been to rescue Alec and escape. What was the pont in changing the timer though?
If Bond is also captured, it gives the Russians less time to do anything about it and it then becomes a suicide mission.

plus 6 minutes would have been better for Bond, as the he would have already escaped and the soldiers would be making their way back indoors when the facility would go up and Bond would not be caught in the blast.
The reason they're @ Arkangel is to destroy the chemical weapons facility. That's the mission. When 006 has his head (supposedly) blown apart, the mission objective still remains: Destroy the facility. Shortening the time means the Soviet army has less time to diffuse the bombs.
You have to ask yourself: What is the mission objective? It's that simple.
By the way, it's very amusing that you think the soldiers would conveniently "be making their way back indoors when the facility would go up"

Hey, maybe Q-Branch also gave Bond some proximity mines. He could have littered the place with them before bolting.By the way, it's very amusing that you think the soldiers would conveniently "be making their way back indoors when the facility would go up"
Very Cute!
Perhaps you should send in your cv to Eon and declare your candidacy to replace P+W?
