Was watching the ultimate edition dvd and found that there was an extra line of dialogue not present in any other release, the website imdb lists the line in its alternate versions page. "An extra line of dialog can be heard in the Ultimate Edition. It is "His brotherhood also have exotic ways to keep it a closed shop" and is said by Blofeld. It occurs after he says to Tracy, "Your own father's profession is not entirely within the law". This is where the scene normally ends before it cuts away to a scene involving helicopters.

Does anyone know why the extra line can only be found here, i.e. why it is was cut from previous releases?

This is not so much an extra line, rather it has been re-inserted. A few years ago I had the NTSC video release of OHMSS and it had that line.

Unfortunately OHMSS has been badly treated on its various releases (anyone remember the UK Warner Home Video releases??). Thankfully, and finally, the film is back to being complete on DVD. Now if they could just reset the colour to how it should be, all will finally be well.

As far as I remember, I've never heard the line in any version (VHS, SE & UE DVSs)

Can't say I can remember that line when watching the UE disc of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. May have to pop it in right now...

You may be right. The last time I watched On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, I thought heard a piece of dialogue that sounded "new" in this scene. It's fascinating to see all of these different cuts, and it sometimes puzzles me why certain things are left out.

I suppose the line is a bit superfluous, and was excised to keep up the pacing or something.

Calling doublenoughtspy. If you have an OHMSS question, he is the man with the answer.

Just played the disc now and there it was. Wonder if it was cut out on previous VHS tapes too.

I had the CBS/Fox version on videotape, and that line was absent. The first time I heard it was when a friend(no, not Doublenought)played his copy at a friend's theater. I call Doublenoughtspy thinking it was a heretofore unheard line, and he calmly points out that the print used for the CBS/Fox version happened to be missing that line. I later noticed that other Bond films on CBS/Fox were missing a line here, a small scene there.

I think this line was missing from most UK prints, but no idea why.

Despite viewing UK TV and VHS copies, I first remember the line showing up on the 1991 US laserdisc, which I watched around '94 time. This was the first occasion I saw an absolute complete print of the film with the line intact, including all the other numerous missing scenes. However, IMDB does say of the 1991 laserdisc: 'This is a new transfer of the UK version of this film which was never seen before in the USA'.

The line was absent again (plus some other brief footage) from my US region one SE DVD.

It always bothered me that, having released the complete version on LD and VHS, the first DVD transfer was incomplete.
An anamorphic (16x9) transfer has to originate from film elements (a print or if possible, the original negative). Had MGM used the same LD telecine (4x3) for the DVD, the film would have looked terrible due to lower vertical resolution. Unfortunately, when it came to transfer it to DVD, they couldn't be bothered to look for a better print.

I noticed this the first time I watched the Special Edition DVD.. the line was cut out as well as Bond saying " I told you that crowd would discourage them". My old VHS copy has the lines in and I was slightly annoyed that the Special Edition DVD cut them out.. However, I was delighted that the Ultimate Edition DVD of OHMSS has restored these lines.

I didn't know this at all. Good thing the UE sorted this out, I'll look out for it next time I watch the film.

I never noticed this. I'll have to listen for it next time I watch the film. Seems a bit strange that it was cut in previous releases, since it's only one small line.

There are differences, unfortunately with this movie on video. My DVD, from 8 years ago does not have this line, or the line after the car chase.
