So far, Craig's Bond has been a more literary based, realistic (by the standards of Bond) character. It is, however a character set in the present (which I think may be a problem in presenting a character who is Bond in anything but name only, but a topic for another day) so obviously Craig can't be a world war two veteran or really a veteran of much of any conflict at least as far as the Royal Navy is concerned. So, apart from the camp aspect the whole "Commander Bond" thing opens a can of worms as to what is this character's backstory. If you keep it Royal Navy you have some explaining to do, but if it's something else, then you're deviating from both literary and movie Bond.

Wouldn't it make sense if he had been a SBS officer (it seems the usually are naval officers, generally with the rank of RM Major or RN Lt.-Cdr)? He could have passed the SBS selection tests just freshly ground from the Britannia Royal Naval College, thus never really serving as a commanding officer on a warship? And SBS has recently been seriously involved in fights in Afghanistan, Bond could then be a veteran.

This raises another issue: what's Bond's education??? The rank of commander is rather high, and to make it I guess that, in time of peace at least, Bond would have had to have a solid higher education.

Well, the literary Bond didn't really have much (or any) higher education having attended prep school and then enlisted at an early age. Movie Bond (according to YOLT) took a first in Oriental languages at Cambridge (or was it Oxford?). Yet another deviation from literary to movie Bond, so I guess anything is possible for Craig's Bond.

Promotion is merit based more than education based. Officers in their late thirties and forties usually have the rank of commander, however an exceptional officer can be in the thirties and be commander. Also he could of been a LT Commander. But then again it is just a film biography so details do not really matter that much.

Merit based? I beg to differ my friend. Knowing the British Military way of things, education is a very, very important aspect for promotion both in the Royal Navy and the Army (missed out the RAF - the ice cream boys :)). Merit has a lot to do with it please don't get me wrong but education has indeed a major role, if not the major role. I found the details of Bond's film biography quite accurate in fact.

And let us not forget Eton please. :(
