Suprised recently to find that Commando comic books are still being published.

I imagine anyone who was British, a kid in the 60s-80s and liked war had a Commando comic at some point.
Every fortnight a 64 page story, usually set in WWII and in the style of a B&W war film:
Cowardly Nazis who say things like "Achtung! The Englander!" and "Donner Und Blitzen!"
Square jawed heroes fighting "Nips" and "Jerries"

Yes, ever so slightly xenophobic. Suprising to see them in a newsagent in 2008.

Interestingly, the one I bought recently (probably for the first time since I was 8) featured a hero named Bond who is a young man at the start of WWII and is recruited into SOE...

Was/Is anyonelse a fan of these?

Indeed I was. Superb books.

Was also a fan of a short lived comic called Bullet some time in the late 70s. I think it later merged with another comic called Warlord.

Didn't know comics could actually merge as such but by then I had moved on to some other hero type...

Don't remember those. The other one I read was "Battle Action" which was a merger of "Battle!" and "Action!". That had the "Charley's War" strip which you can now buy as a graphic novel and is supposed to be a classic of it's kind.

"Battle Action" eventually became "Battle Action Force" in order to promote some short lived Mattel action figure product.

Oh yes, I now remember those two comics as well although neither were read. I never knew they merged too.

Seems to have been all the rage at the time.

"Gott im Himmel, these Englanders fight like madmen"!!!

When I was in the Navy (Royal Australian Navy that is) you could always find one of these comics lying around the messdecks (crews quarters aboard ship). They were always good for a laugh, but honestly, if the Germans were that easy to beat, the war would have been over in less than a year! Also, too many Army and Airforce themed stories, not enough naval action!!

I remember "Bullet". I think the main hero "Fireball" (A Jason King lookalike) was supposed to be the nephew of Lord Peter Flint the main hero of ""Warlord" so there was a link between the two.

Did anybody ever get the Fireball pendant? Always wanted one of those.
