Those filthy bastards...I've already got the US and UK Hardbacks to buy, in addition to the Centenary Hardbacks. What's this setting us back now? $1,500? $2,000?

Will cost you about $1,500 if you're in the US.

100 of these will be made available in the US for $1500. Very pricey, but very nice. Something to think about.

Bit ghastly, isn't it?

I mean, it's only a book. One wonders about who would put this on display, doubtless next to their leather-bound Shakespeare to match their leather-bound sofas and leather-bound wives, volumes they have doubtless never actually opened and read.

From Black Books, a much missed programme:-

Customer: Those books, how much?
Bernard: Hmm?
Customer: Those books. Leather-bound ones.
Bernard Yes, Dickens. The collected works of Charles Dickens.
Customer: They're real leather?
Bernard: They're real Dickens.
Customer: I have to know if they're real leather because they have to go with a sofa. Everything else in my house is real. I'll give you two hundred for them.
Bernard: Two hundred what?
Customer: Two hundred pounds...
Bernard: Are they leather-bound pounds?
Customer: No...
Bernard: Sorry, I need leather-bound pounds to go with my wallet. Next!

It's a bit naff, isn't it? Does it make the book any better?

Nice to have a visual version of Bond's Bentley finally.

Obviously I'll never buy it, but if it gets them a few column inches here and there I say well done. What has happened to IFP over the last few years? They've suddenly got very good at their jobs!

Now, I like special editions of books. (Take for example, the slipcased and signed limited editions of the Young Bond books) But this one just doesn't do it for me, and the price is rather exorbitant.

Won't be buying this one... but it's not a bad little idea. Pity about the OTT design etc.

I wonder how much one of these wuould fetch in 50 years' time, with a fake Ian Fleming autograph on it...

I think if you spend that much for a book then it gets its own shelf.

...and leather-bound wives...

Brilliant.

Am I missing something or does it not say anything about this edition being signed by Faulks? It better be.

David Schofield has a good point. I think I need to read and love the book before I can consider spending this much money on a special edition. But I will seriously consider it. I am a hardcore collector of Bond novels with an emphasis on continuation novels, so...

But I've only spent over $1000 for only two items in my entire collection (first CR and a Houdini item). Part of my own justification for crossing that barrier is that I have to know I can instantly and easily turn the item around for what I paid or more. Not sure that will be the case with this.

Check out the additional photo of how the car in laid into the book at dexigner.com. Kind of nifty. I also like that the pages are double-oh numbers. Shame they blurred the text.

Display case. Full shelf. Surrounded by some choice DMC items from my upcoming London trip.

([censored], I'm talking myself into this.)

Okay, it's already getting interesting.

Compare the pic at 007 Magazine to the one on CBn. Note the CBn pic has the Penguin logo and the 007 Mag has a Doubleday logo. This is curious. As I said, 100 will be made available to the US market (and can be purchased via the Doubleday website). So does this mean 100 will be stamped Doubleday and 200 with Penguin 007. Which will prove to be more valuable? Penguin has the 007 connection...but there will be fewer Doubledays.

Which to get?

Both.

What's more curious, to me, is that Faulks' name is absent from both.

Actually there is only one thing that's really disturbing me here. What, if this is going to start a trend? And what if the fans of Thomas Harris one day decide to demand their own luxury leather bound edition of 'The Silence of the Lambs'? My concern isn't the price actually, but the leather...

Interesting spot there. Wonder if there really will be two versions - one with the Doubleday logo and the other with Penguin 007.

zencat, did you ever get something like that gun vault from the LAX shooting range for your Fleming books? Now that would be nice for displaying your Devil May Care Bentley book(s).

I may be talking out of turn here, but there 'appears' to be two different cars. One without a top, and one with. The one that has the ribbon attached(?) appears to have a roof...

Also, even though it says the car will be in a car shaped hole in the book, is this getting to be understood as a hole in every single page, a la 'hidden gun' routine, or some other method I am missing here?

I daresay if I am mistaken, perhaps to save face I will have to do some post posting editing.

Looks that way in the photo- the holes are on every page.

Trying to fit that model car into the book by cutting a great big hole in it, seems to be going about it the wrong way.

The whole concept of Bond/DMC/Bentley doesn't seem to be well thought out and executed in this particular endevour.

Usually i would buy a "deluxe" edition but not this time.

Yup, there you go.

I didn't expand the image to its fullest. The blurred effect of the pages with the holes, to me, gave an impression it was a roof.

I am thinking of retraining in film continuity too, don't you know.

While the 3D car is a nice idea, trying to stuff it into a book seems to have cheapened the presentation somewhat, dare I say. Perhaps a more tasteful 'car' idea would have been a flat pewter bookmark affair that was intended to just fit between the pages. Perhaps when the book wasn't being read, there could have been a small recess for the 1mm thick bookmark to be slotted so as not to indent the adjacent pages...

Say one were to read it on a hot day, and held it up to shield one's eyes from the sun - either one gets bopped on the nose by the car falling out of place or, if one has sensibly removed the car, the pages are more likely to tear.

I appreciate it's not intended for that purpose and will probably never be read as it will probably be acquired by those who cannot read, but I think there is a health and safety issue here.
