What exactly is the pretitle sequence?

I think that the pre-title will just be the final scene from Casino Royale. The gun barrel opens on the establishing shot of Mr. White villa, then he pulls up, phone rings, shot in the leg, Bond introduces himself, cut to titles. Seems a bit simple, just like Casino Royale, no big 20 minute action sequence here, just a simple couple of minutes. Plus, back before Casino Royale even opened I heard somewhere that the pretitle for the next one had already been filmed, and since this is the 'next one', shouldn't it be safe to say that this could be it.

I think you're not right, because we know that there won't be any CASINO ROYALE scenes or pictures in QUANTUM OF SOLACE (cf. what the producers said before).
For the rest, what exactly the pretitle is remains, actually, a mystery...

I seriously doubt a director of Marc Forster's ilk would use pre-shot footage. Besides, when Casino Royale finished shooting, there was no script for the film then known as Bond 22. Plus, using footage from the previous film would just slow Quantum of Solace right down; as brief as the scenes were, audiences who had already seen Casino Royale - probably most of them - would grow bored with it. We've been told the PTS involves a car chase ending with a collision and explosion, anyway.

This sounds like it's going to be the coolest pretitle sequence in quite some time!!

At least since the last one.

I just hope the PTS isn't a long one like TWINE. I still believe that one should've been cut in half. The Bilbao sequence (with the revelation that Renard was the shooter with the laser sighting) should should transition to the titles and then followed up with the Thames boat chase.

Give us something lean, yet intense. Our appetite's need only be whetted.

The TWINE PTS would have been a lot better that way. I especially like ending the PTS on Renard's revelation. The boat chase could have been the chase after the credits sequence, like the parkour in CR.

I do believe the original plan was to have the PTS end after Bilbao and the film resumed in London, with a bridging scene showing Bond driving his Aston Martin to the castle in Scotland. However, Michael Apted felt the PTS was either too short or did not have enough action (in the wake of the likes of GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies, the Bilbao sequence is very sedate, but still pretty good), and so the PTS was rearranged, and the bridging scene was cut out.

Having watched a few Bond films over the past few days, I've noticed none of the pre-titles run for more than about ten minutes; the longest I saw was Licence to Kill, which ran just over 9:30 or so.

True true, but that one went on far too long because there was too much happening: Bond in Spain, Bond in London, the (in my opinion) extremely dull boat chase. The QoS teaser sounds like it's going to have a great car chase, and I don't remember the last time we got a kick [censored] car chase as the teaser (OHMSS perhaps?).

It's not a car chase exactly, but there's certainly a lot of action in, around, and on top of a moving vehicle in TLD's pretitles. I agree, though, that a thrilling car chase would be a great way for QOS to open.

I love that whole teaser, it's truly the last sequence that has a sort of energy to it that none of the teasers since have really had. I think it's in part to Barry's elecrtifying score, too bad it was the last time he scored a pretitle sequence

TLD's pre-titles were great for the era and had arguably one of the best "reveals" of 007 throughout the franchise.

You can't tell me seeing Dalton/Bond for the first time as 004 falls to his death wasn't inspired.

You're forgetting Lazenby's ingenious reveal in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

I agree man, I agree :( If I implied otherwise it was not intentional.
