Bolivians also miffed with 007 filming

Turns out the Bolivian government isn't that pleased either with the new James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, which was being filmed in northern Chile.

Some Chileans are already irate because its national territory was supposedly used to represent the turf of long-time rival Bolivia. [See earlier La Plaza post.]

Now, reports the Bolivian daily La Razon, a Bolivian official has written a letter to the film's producers, citing an alleged "stigmatization of Bolivians'' in the film. The vice-minister of culture, Pablo Groux, is firstly peeved that Chile was used to represent Bolivia. The two countries haven't gotten over a 19th century war. But the vice minister was also upset at news that Bolivian drug traffickers are depicted in the film. Bolivia is the world's third-largest producer of coca-leaf, the raw material in cocaine.

"This stigma shouldn't characterized Bolivians,'' wrote Groux, "not even in the fictional context of Bond.''

Ah, so the Bolivians have the same complaint that Cubans had about "Scarface" and Italians about, well, pretty much every mob movie ever made.
They should look on the bright side: Bolivia will actually be mentioned. I'll bet most Americans couldn't find it on a map.
I doubt the makers of Bond are too worried about losing money in Bolivian theatres.

The producers DID go to Bolivia. Bolivia said NO.
I don't know if anyone here knows, but the Bolivian real life president is an Indian. And I don't mean to imply that he looks like one, I mean he is ONE. And really proud of it. He even dresses with native attires (well not like a bird or anything like that. For example, he will do CNN without a suit, coat and tie, etc. He will throw on a very different outfit, which as man, don't know how to describe). He is very nationalistic, and he really did not want to have the exterior or interior of old or new Bolivian buildings for a movie, which he thinks, portrays Bolivia in a shady light.

I always find this stuff funny. If memory serves me correctly, North Korea boycotted Die Another Day because they were portrayed as "bad guys" & then announced they had nuclear weapons a few weeks later.
