Eon Productions reportedly developing a 'multi-million pound' remake

Very surprised that I can't find mention of this - yes I realise that it's not strictly 007 - but according to It's Chitty Chitty Bang back a small piece in last weeks Sunday Express Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is set to soar on the big screen once more.

The item goes on to say: The popular musical with the magical flying car is to be remade with big-name stars, a multi-million pound budget and cutting-edge special effects.

The project is being developed by Eon productions, maker of the James Bond movies. It owns the rights to the children's story, written by Bond's creator Ian Fleming.

"It will probably go into production next year after we've finished with the latest James Bond film," said one Eon executive.

Johnny Depp is being courted to play the infamous child catcher, played in the original 1968 film by Benny Hill
(York Membery got that wrong, Benny played the toymaker, it was Robert Helpmann playing the child catcher). "We're hopeful that he'll say yes," said the source.

It follows the success of the stage revival of the musical at the London Palladium which ran between 2002 and 2005 and earned 70 million. The show became one of the Palladiums biggest hits, beating both Oliver and Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Can we but hope that they don't decide to re-design Chitty and make one that looks nothing like the Chitty we know and love.

If they can "peel back the layers of Chitty and see what demons may lie there", why not! I'd be quite interested in a reboot of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Brilliant News. A Great way to celebrate Ian Flemings Centenary. Wouldn't it be sweet if Craig took the role of Caractacus Potts and Eva took the part of Truly Scrumptious?

Is this gonna be a musical?

I wish the Eon representatives were that open regarding Bond movie news

Depp was the first person I thought of but I wonder if Daniel can carry a tune?

The only reason it'd make any sense to remake CCBB would be to finally get it right (like CR 2006 finally righted 1967's wrong). In the case of Chitty, this would mean to follow Fleming's original story, which is much better (and much more Bondian) that Dahl's script and please, not make it into a bloody musical this time! And why would anybody in their right minds think of Johnny Depp? Why everything has to be so clich

Is there really a demand for a Chitty remake? Wasn't the recent London/Broadway musical enough? Does that mean we can expect a "Call Me Bwana" remake with Adam Sandler?

I really, really wonder if this will ever see the light of day and how far into development this actually is (who is to know how reliable this Eon source is?).

hmmm. Don't like this at all. I'm often opposed to remakes of films, but this project makes me uneasy because it could tempt EON to remake some of the Bond films, and I never, ever, ever want to see that happen.

Wasn't there also news a few months back that EON was going to start work on a few non-Bond projects?

Remaking Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as Bond 23 would be highly entertaining.

Well this is something concrete. But Johnny Depp? How predictable. Might as well get Tim Burton to direct.

Well, I have no more of a desire to see a remake of this now than I did six months ago. :(

It's be nice if they'd remake a few Fleming Bond books properly: Diamonds are Forever and YOLT spring to mind!
