Been chopped in half by a sliding door
Taken cyanide
Been hung upside down halfway up an alp
Been shot by 3 blind mice
Been accosted in a public toilet by a tall blond man with an "interesting" wristwatch
Had a rope climb in Gibraltar rudely interrupted.
Memo to MI6 agents.. If you're offered a mission and M says that 007 will be accompanying you...DECLINE IMMEDIATELY!!!

I was looking through The James Bond encyclopedia last night and I shocked to see that it read "Dead; Bitten by Cobra" next to Carters name! Has anyone else noticed this and has it been confirmed?
I thought for a minute you were talking about the former President. It certainly wouldn't be out of character for him to try negotiating with poisonous reptiles.

I always was curious as to what happened to that character, though. I always assumed Bond just ditched him there.

Anyway, Bond and his team did a really sloppy job in Madagascar, even before blasting an embassy. Didn't anyone else it was a bit "too much"? Can you imagine pros being that spottable in a crowd?

I've sorted Carters Wikipedia page out.
Looks wrong to me. I don’t care what the James Bond encyclopaedia says, if it ain’t on the film it is not proven so.
The Wikipedia should read, ‘According to the James Bond Encyclopaedia, Carter was bitten by the cobra in Madagascar and lost his life.’ It may have been the plan for Carter to die, but no entry in an encyclopaedia is going stop future writers from using Carter again if they so wish.
This sort of thing is why the Wikipedia sucks.

Whilst we're on this scene, and I can't be bothered spamming up the board for a quick query, is it just me or when bomber chap runs up to the embassy a bit out of puff, the guard at the gate already appears to have the man's passport in his hands?
Probably is just me.

I've been wondering what happened to him ever since I first saw the film. I'd assumed that the snake got him but was never sure. Ah well, another star on the MI6 memorial, next to the agents/ sacrificial lambs who have:
Been chopped in half by a sliding door
Taken cyanide
Been hung upside down halfway up an alp
Been shot by 3 blind mice
Been accosted in a public toilet by a tall blond man with an "interesting" wristwatch
Had a rope climb in Gibraltar rudely interrupted.

I didn't think he died - I thought he just fell in the hole. I just figured that he was hanging out in nightclubs with Hip, Smithers, Jack Wade, Quarrel Jr, sons of Kerim Bey and other such characters who's only function is to ping dialogue back to 007 like some sort of demented sonar device.
Mind you, I did go clubbing with Hip and Wade and it was great fun, albeit in a surreal kind of way....

And speaking of nightclubs. In LALD, after Bond has disappeared through the floor and Leiter returns, Felix asks what has happened to his friend. The barman gets as far as "Your Friend? Listen...." before the scene cuts off. What on earth does he tell him?
"Listen, your friend was.. "thrown out for heckling the singer?"
" Barred for jumping on stage, grabbing the mike and launching into an excruciating rendition of Diamonds Are Forever?"
or
" Shown the door for running across to the booths and attempting to spin round in the seats, shouting 'I'm having another funny turn"..

Well... condolences to Carter's family and friends!

Completely agreed. The lack of professionalism displayed in this scene is quite amazing, and makes one wonder what ranks Carter and Bond had been promoted from, because surely they would have learned a thing or two in the military about how not to be spotted that easily.

In fact, IMO, they look exactly like SAS soldiers lost in a crowd of locals. They are dead serious and tense when everybody around is shouting and gesticulating, speak (seemingly to themselves) in a low tone while everybody is shouting, etc. Not to mention Carter checking his invisible earphone with his fingers. Amazing!
By the way, I recently watched a documentary showing real-life plain clothes elite policemen in action, and it was amazingly ridiculous too when it came to discretion. But hell, it's supposed to be MI6 there!

I just watched Casino Royale again last night, and was left simply amazed at the sublime idiocy of Carter.
Yeah... If he died, it's most certainly from M having him executed for screwing up so badly an operation than from a Cobra!

Reports of his death appear to have been exaggerated.

It's not just you. I noticed it too - but only when I was first viewing it on DVD. I missed the mistake at the cinema.

Funny isn't it? You seem to miss everyting when its on a massive screen and you pick up on more whilst viewing it on a considerably smaller screen.

The draft shooting script that made its way around the internet indicates that the bomber shows his ID to a security guard at the gate, but the scene as filmed shows the guard already on the phone, with document in hand, when Mollaka runs up. Maybe the guard was checking on someone or something else?

It's a shame Carter cared more about looking cool ("Hey, I've got an earpiece!") than he cared about doing his job professionally.
By the way, why's that guy sniffing his neck?

That's what I assumed. It always seems like there isn't enough time for Mollaka to have already handed him anything at that point.

He has the passport in his hands because Mollaka has just given it to him.
