Just a quick question, do you think that, if Desmond was still alive and was still playing Q at the time. The Producers would have included him in the movie? Just because not many people were bothered when Q was dropped from Casino Royale but if it were Desmond would it be a totally different story? I think its safe to say that John Cleese never was Q to anyone, hence people not being bothered by his disappearance. Desmond, on the other hand, helped make the Bond franchise what it is today and It would of been stupid to not include him in the movie even of it were just a small part like in From Russia With Love, They rebooted Bond, why not Q. They could of made him go darker and have a rocky relationship with Bond. Which I would have loved to see if Desmond was still with us.

[mra]I suspect Desmond may have bowed out gracefully at the producers request. It would have given them a great excuse to never have Q again

He would have been 93 years old. I suspect that it would not have happened, reboot or not.

I've always thought of his final lines in TWINE as exactly that, him bowing out gracefully.

Does anyone else remember him saying Dalton's portrayal was the closest to Fleming? I know Desmond was a big Fleming fan, so I would have liked to see his take on Craig.

I don't know whether or not Desmond Llewelyn would have continued in the role if he were still with us, but I most certainly would have welcomed his return in each and every film as long as he wanted to continue in the role. He completely owned that role, and made it an institution in the franchise. Also, it would have been interesting to see him get to return to the more serious tone of his character that was present in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE.

I do agree. While I would have welcomed his return, I still think he most likely would have left the role. It would have been interesting, however, to see him return to the serious tone from the early Connery films. In a way I feel sorry for Daniel Craig for the fact that he never got to work with Desmond. I would have liked to have seen how Desmond's Q interacted with Craig's Bond.

Something about the timing of Desmond's departure feels providential to me, rendering all "what if" scenarios irrelevant.

Personally, I suspect he had decided TWINE was it for him.

It's an interesting theoretical question: what if Llewellyn had been young enough and still alive - would they still have ditched Q? I'm not so sure - they probably would have had him in there, with or withouth OTT gadgets.

As it was I'm sure he would have been too old - they way he left the scene in TWINE was a great way for him to leave the series.

Yes. I remember an interview with Desmond back in 1987. When asked how Dalton compares to the others, he said that he was closest to the 007 in the Fleming novels, that he had gone back and read every single one and that he was also a darker Bond. He commented that they had all been great to work with, but that Dalton was the first to really take the role very seriously and also the first to allow James Bond to be seen with his hair messy, from water, and clothes dirty.

The producers might have done it if Desmond had been willing, which would have been unfortunate given how much Dench's presence alone bothers me, but I think he would've bowed out while saying very positive things about Daniel. Between the age he'd have been and presumably having been in the 40th anniversary film, I can't see him thinking even just one more, especially a reboot of the franchise, would be a better time to leave.

Yeah, Dame Judi is getting on a bit too, isn't she? She's the same age that Desmond was when filming The Living Daylights, I think.

Just been watching Casino Royale again, and it's quite interesting to think what it would be like if Eon didn't bother with the reboot. Of course we would have had the gunbarrel, Q and Moneypenny. But what about the action scenes? what gadgets would the DBS have? how would they make it more action oriented?

- For one thing, there would be a massive car chase at three in the morning, when Bond jumps in his DBS before the torture sequence.

- Q would probably have flown out to Montenegro to show Bond what gadgets are on the DBS.

- Bond would probably have rappeled down the side of Drydens office to escape after he shot him.

- The Poker scenes would probably happen off sceen, to give the film a more action oriented flavour.

Yes, I remember him saying on TV in 1987, that Dalton had read all the books and that he was the first Bond to let his hair get wet and leave it out of place.
