I love that Tanner will be appearing, but any word on Jeffrey Wright's Felix yet? Apologies if I've missed the announcement, there's been a lot of news in the past 2 days!
He's in.

Felix is returning as well. He's listed on the Quantum of Solace website as being in the film.

A really positive move by the producers to bring back Tanner in my opinion. I hope that they emphasise his friendship with Bond more than in previous movies.
I hope that they emphasize his friendship as well, although I don't think that it would take much to emphasize it more than in previous films. I think for that to happen, really all they would need to do is have them just exchange a somewhat friendly sounding "hello" and it would already be emphasized more than it was in previous films.

I do like Michael Kitchen, but I think that it must be a conscious move by the producers to go for a much younger actor, especially someone like Rory Kinnear who is gaining a fantastic reputation in the British theatre. There probably lies a good reason behind such a move.Interesting news although I would have liked to have seen Michael Kitchen reprise the role, a great actor

I do hope he's not involved in any horse riding scenes at the Palio.
Not even remotely funny.

Rory's father, the actor Roy Kinnear, tragically died when he fell from a horse during filming of 'The Return Of The Musketeers' (1989).

That being said, I'm wicked glad that this has been confirmed!! Hopefully Mr. Kinnear will stick around longer than Michael Kitchen (whom I thoroughly enjoyed as Tanner). We've now got an original Fleming title and another old friend of a Fleming character. Methinks this is all coming together nicely so far.

Incidentally, Tanner was originally going to be in "The Living Daylights" as well. He was to be in the scene at the safe house when they were de-briefing Koskov.

Glad I caught something in the IGN thread, that wasn't already here! When I read the IGN article's mention of Tanner, I instantly called my dear friend and longtime fellow Bond fan to impart the news of Tanner's return. We both hit on this news being a logical explanation for Tobias Menzies (spelling likely off...but he was brilliant in both HBO's 'Rome' and his brief turn as Villiers in CR). I'm keen to see how this new fella works out, for all his accolades on the British stage. If he fits Tanner, then I would love to see an actor portraying Tanner for more than two films. Having been weened on Fleming's original works, prior to being allowed to delve into the films, Tanner always struck me as being every bit the stock character that 'Q' and 'Moneypenny' became on screen. It would be wonderful if this fella nails it and sticks around to reprise the role repeatedly methinks.Guess this might explain why there was no need to see Villiers return from Casino Royale.

Yes, sorry about that - wasn't actually intended as a joke but I can see that it comes across that way.

I had recently said in the Charles Robinson thread that I'd like to see Tanner back. This is excellent news - if he's going to be Bond's mate, and not a Villers type!

I'm sure it's just a case of the writer being lax in their typing. The writer probably heard M's chief of staff or right-hand man and decided to shorten/simplify it to M's assistant. I'm confident that the producers will make Bill Tanner M's chief of staff.I like the idea of bringing Tanner back, but I hope it's not just a renaming of the lame Villiers character. Tanner should be Chief of Staff not M's secretary/assistant...
I agree. I'm thrilled that Tanner is back, but he definitely isn't what I pictured Tanner as being. He seems too young to me, but I will reserve judgement until I see the film. Hopefully, the screenwriters write him as a true friend of Bond's--or at least by the end of the film on the road to being good friends.Fantastic news! Although he isn't quite how I pictured Tanner, I'll wait and see how he performs but I'm sure he'll do a great job - something I think the world learned after Craig was cast.
