My god, Tim Dalton grabbed that role, shook it, and made it his own..

Thats why he is one of the best Bonds..

This was another of those segments I saw when it was originally aired just before going to classes. At least the second part. I remember seeing the scene Cubby is watching of Dalton on the train where Kara is arrested and thinking "yeah, this guy is Bond." It got me very excited for this film.

I also remember thinking back after seeing TLD for the first time and wondering why that stunt where Bond swings onto the motorcycle wasn't in the film. Of course, we'd get to see it several years later when the DVD came out.

I think I have this segment on tape somewhere along with other TLD stuff I taped around that time.

Its always surprised me that he's never had a go in the directors chair. He always appears to be very involved in all aspects of filming and has previously produced plays and even been involved in rewrites of scripts.

Wow, this really takes me back... I was 19 at the time and thrilled at there being a new James Bond and was following the progress of the movie very closely. I probably religiously taped all these segments, I just don't remember...

Is it just me or does Dalton appear more intimidating and daunting in this interview than he does in the movies. He also seems to have a way of talking that i'd imagine Bond having. His voice is deeper and expressions more varied and has a great sense of humour that never came across on screen. This is probably the first interview i've ever seen of him and i'm shocked  I never imagined him to be like this. He's more Bond here than he was in the movies...He just seemed so restrained in the movies.

Timothy Dalton really knows his 'craft' as an actor, and as a person.

I always would cast Tim as the 'third incarnation' of Bond, and not the fourth.

I got that vibe as well. Him practising the punch move, serious dont mess with me face, glasses on and a cigarette in his mouth. That IS Bond.

But why do you think his Bond was never like that? Dalton would seem like an interesting Bond in real life, but I found his Bond on screen to be quite restrained, one-dimensional, and lacking the charm that oozes out of every pore in this interview. Hell, he could give Roger a run for his money in the charm stakes. Plus, that hint of danger...Dalton comes across as a guy I wouldn't want to p*ss off in real life despite all the charm. Dalton in this interview is my idea of 007, shame this Bond never made it on screen.

He had plenty of charm on screen as well.

In the scene in Vienna, he purchases Milovy a frock and says "let's buy it". He also hides his gun (to save scaring the folk) when pouncing over the bush when Saunders gets killed.

As brought up by Judo Chop in a seperate thread chalk it down to the production team not giving Dalton the best/right material to work with.

I always felt that the powers-that-be were torn between the commercial success of Roger Moore's version of Bond and Dalton's desire to take Bond in a new direction. It was almost as if, on the one hand, they said, "OK, Tim, do your thing," but then behind his back, they were concocting ways to recreate Moore's portrayal. So we ended up with a diluted mishmash of both, instead of the fully realized, edgy, dangerously charming persona we see in Dalton in this interview. It's a shame, really. As much as I love Dalton's two films (and wish there had been more), I agree with those who say that if his vision had been given 100 percent support behind the scenes (as Daniel Craig's was), they could've been so much better.

If this is how you were being introduced to the new Bond, how could you not look forward to seeing him in action?

Shame really, another missed opportunity along with the countless others of the franchise. Dalton exudes Bondness in this interview that its really suprising how, on-screen, his Bond is somewhat subdued. I still enjoy his potrayel but to see this side of him on screen would have probably increased his popularity among the masses. To be honest, I think Dalton fan's like him because of the 'spirit' in which he went about putting his Bond on screen, rather than the execution. His Bond was good in spirit, but he could have been sooooooo much better as well. This I blame Cubby. It was clear he was losing it well after Moonraker. He lost site of what made the character popular in the first place and settled for cheesy 'family entertainment'. This is all to clear just by looking at TD's films.

I also find it laughable that skinny Brosnan was even considered. He himself said he thought he lacked the gravitas for the role then...I could have told you that. Its a good thing we got TD when we did because Brosnan would have been just a continuation of what Moore started for 15 years!! Instead, it was only for ten
