Read an interesting line in a article about Vic Flick at Dr Shatterhands excellent site -

In 1989 he worked with Eric Clapton on License To Kill's title song but it was dropped at the last minute in favor of Gladys Knight's rendition.

Very, very interesting. Wonder if it went as far as it was recorded or was it dropped before that?

It was recorded. They say that Clapton sleeps with the tapes under his pillow.

This is being discussed, say, every other year or so.

Yes, I see. There where interesting informations about the song in this earlier threads. Thanks. Well did my own research and found this -

LICENCE TO KILL - Eric Clapton
7 February 1989 - Townhouse Studios, London

Unreleased music
Total Time - xx:xx

Track:
James Bond Theme
Producer - Michael Kamen

Personnel -
Eric Clapton - guitar
Vic Flick - guitar
Ray Cooper - percussion
Steve Ferrone - drums
Michael Kamen - orchestration

Notes -
Unused title music for the James Bond Motion Picture - Licence To Kill - (1989).

Original music by Michael Kamen
Maybe Eric Clapton's contribution (for incidental music if not the title) is uncredited for some of the score; due to the fact that Michael Kamen is credited with the original music.

Apperantly there are some bootleg recordings of some sort out there.

No. this information is from Marc Roberty's book http://www.amazon.co...t...911&sr=1-13
. He's the leading Clapton archivist/chronologist. I think he had access to Clapton's archives, but of course was not allowed to take anything with him, and I doubt that he was allowed to listen to anything he wanted.

There is definitely no bootleg of these recordings out there. More capable people than I have tried for years to get their hands on it, not even Vic Flick has a copy of the recordings, so we certainly would have heard about it, had anything of this appeared somewhere.

I think not hearing it makes it a lot better than you think. Given the hype it usually receives, its eventual release can only be a massive letdown.

Yes, you're probably right. There is always a reason why they didn't used it in the first place. With some exceptions, it's because it wasn't good enough. Anyway, it would be interesting to have the opportunity to find out.

I'm sure this would at least have been cool to hear during the end credits--definitely superior to "If You Asked Me To". That song had 1980's written all over it, and I don't mean that as a compliment.

I agree; it wasn't a good way to end the '80s Bond, and the lines shoe-horned into the script that make reference to the song don't help matters.

I disagree. And so does Celine Dion.

She did a cover of it, though, which was highly successful, I believe.

A little second-hand info...

Friend met Michael Kamen before he died. Kamen supposedly told him that the producers didn't like how it sounded. It was a jam session with Flick, Kamen and Clapton. Not only recorded, but SHOT on video. Kamen said the DVD producers really tried to get it on LTK SE, but that he never heard more from them after saying that Eon had the tapes.

Theory: Eon didn't like it and killed it.

Do the tapes exist? Maybe some busy little beaver can find out some day.

This info is second-hand and should be considered as such.

Keep dancing
