Pretty good show last night...if you don't want to know more yet, this is your warning.
'kay, so, they tested three "myths." Two from LALD, one from CR. From LALD, they first decided to test if an electromagnet built into a rolex could actually be powerful enough to deflect the path of a bullet. They built a rig which would fire a .45 (yes? other calibre?) and the bullet would pass just an inch or so over the watch (on a ballistics jelly arm) on its way to the target. First, they fired a control shot just to get a hole in the target. If the magnet didn't work, the second bullet would pass through the same hole made by the first. And? ....BUSTED. No effect. They had to build a magnet pathway like Q's tea tray magnet in TSWLM before it had the slightest effect.
Next, from CR, they tested to see if Bond could really escape the consulate by shooting a propane tank with his P99. So, they took an empty tank out and fired a P99 twice from behind safety glass. And...BUSTED. The bullets made dents in the tank, but failed to pierce it at all. So, they moved up. A shotgun fired through one side only, and a thirty-aught-six made it all the way through and out. Next, they tried these with full tanks. Nada. They used tracer rounds (with burning phosphorous on the tails), hoping to ignite the gas, but nothing. They blew it up with explosives. After that, they got another tank (why I love this show) and took it out to a "secret" desert location and fired incendiary(sp?) bullets, which burn at the front and back, from a jeep-mounted chain gun. 50 rounds/second. Yep, that got it. Pretty awesome.
Finally, the boat jump from LALD. The guys' insurance company wouldn't let them actually drive the boat, so they decided it'd have to be remote-controlled. They actually got a speedboat that looked near-identical to the actual boat in the film (and it ran great!) and rigged up a robotic steering mechanism that could respond to Adam's remote. Adam & Jamie followed close behind in another speedboat. They had built a scaffolding ramp that was angled at 18', and placed a barge with an early 70's car and a dummy dressed as J.W. Pepper in the way so the jump could be as "authentic" as possible. And...PLAUSIBLE! Actually, Adam lost control of the boat at the last second due to the control boat having to cut across the wake from the other boat, and the LALD boat did a barrel roll/flip over the barge and landed capsized. Still, it jumped the barge with perfect trajectory. They only had the one shot at it. So because it didn't land and keep going, they couldn't "confirm" it, but "plausible" is basically a rough confirmation.
Besides some goofy charicatures and play-acting by the team, it was a great little episode. Oddly, they only used storyboarded images of the myths' context in the films. No actual footage. I suppose they didn't get permission, or otherwise didn't want the "movie magic" to overshadow viewers' expectations, or something. Not sure. Anyway, I'm sure there'll be another Bond-centered episode at some point in the future.
