Read this at Wikipedia:

Lazenby has portrayed James Bond several times over the years in numerous parodies and unofficial 007 roles, most notably the 1983 TV movie The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. and an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, entitled "Diamonds Aren't Forever".

At the same page I read :

The Nude Bomb (1980) - cameo appearance as James Bond

If you check out this Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 film at IMDB.com, GL is listed as "himself" in the cast list.

Anyway, which is true and has anyone seen this movie?

The movie has a new title, The Return of Maxwell Smart. It was on Directv, last month and I missed it by that much. But who knows maybe it will return later this year.

I have three confessions to make in regard to The Nude Bomb:

1. I actually paid money to see it in the theater. :P

2. I actually thought it was very entertaining, at the time. :D

3. Back in 1980 I didn't care a whit about Lazenby, so even if he was in it, I either didn't recognize him or didn't care.

That said, I'm reasonably certain he was not in the film. I remember him in the UNCLE reunion film, and in a perfectly dreadful episode of "The Powers of Matthew Starr" (a series that pretty much defined "perfectly dreadful"), each time playing off his Bond image. So it's not like he wouldn't have run back to the well once more if offered. I just don't remember him.

Unless that was him in the Cylon armor in the "Galactica" part of the Universal tour sequence.

I, too, saw it in the theater(my mother paid), and enjoyed it at the time, though I did wonder where 99 was.

I saw this in a theater too in 1980. I always thought it was strange they changed the name to The Return of Maxwell Smart when it came to television. I guess they should have gone with a title that wouldn't be mistaken for a p

Although I have not seen the movie in several years, I have seen it several times and do not recall seeing Lazenby in the movie (perhaps he is in the background of the scene at Universal Studios). I think I have the VHS tape around here somewhere, I should rewatch it and see if I can spot him.

Count me in as another one who doesn't remember Lazenby in this film.

I saw this film a number of times when it initially ran on cable all those years ago. It was a real fun film to watch; but, nope, no recollection at all of Lazenby.

Funnily enough, same here. I actually went alone to avoid getting picked on by anyone who knew me. :(

I, however, did know of Lazenby because of the butchered version of OHMSS on ABC tv in the second half of the 1970s...but do not recall him in it. I mean I only ever saw it that one time. :)

I too must confess to paying to see this 'Bomb' in 1980. In my defence, I was only 14 at the time and didn't know any better (I had always been a huge fan of the TV show). I can't remember seeing Lazenby in it and if he did cameo as a 'Bond' type of character, I'm sure I would have remembered it. Perhaps it was shot but ended up on the cutting room floor. Even if that is so, I wont be forking out any money to see the 'Deleted Scenes' on "The Nude Bomb" Special Edition DVD.

Wikipedia...

Their info is mixed up. As mentioned above, Laz did his cameo bit in "Return of the Man from UNCLE - The Fifteen Years Later Affair" which aired in '83. He WAS NOT in "The Nude Bomb".

Funny note though: When they were filming the UNCLE TV movie (in '82), all three of the actors (of the time) who had played 007 where all playing 007 somewhere in the world (Rog in OP and Sean in NSNA) at the same time.

I had remarked about that to Doublenought some time ago, how that was a good time to be a Bond fan.

Cheers Saint.

BTW - Missed it in theaters, but am proud to own my VHS copy of TNB. It was sent to me by a friend after Don Adams passed with a gift card that read "Sorry about that Max.". Problem is, everytime I've watched it, I can't get that damn disco title song out of my head for days.

On a better note, I recently received my boxed set of all five seasons of Get Smart. The bonus material is priceless. For the record, if you had any doubts, Barbara Feldon is STILL gorgeous.

The bloopers are the other gem.

Quite right Bryce! I can only hope to be half as fetching when in my early seventies! She's quite stunning even now.

There's another thread on this subject http://debrief.comma...-the-nude-bomb/

The funny thing, is I do recall a cameo of sorts. Or at least an in-joke.

I saw "The Nude Bomb" at a first release drive-in - god almighty am I old - and here's what I *seem* to remember.

After the climax, Maxwell Smart and Agent 22(?) are outside the mountain fortress. A man in a dinner jacket parachutes down. We hear something that narrowly avoids ripping off the Bond theme. The guy is a British agent and is clearly meant to be Bond. He offers his assistance. None is required. Maxwell Smart is excited, tells the British Agent "I'm your biggest fan, I've seen all your movies," and begs the British agent for his autograph. "Bond" signs it and takes off. Maxwell Smart says, "Wow! I've got-" and we expect him to say "James Bond's autograph!" Instead he says, "Wow! I've got George Lazenby's autograph!" It may not have been George Lazenby in the scene but some bit part player.

I seem to recall that when I caught this film on tv when it premiered I wondered where the scene had gone to.

Of course memories gets foggy thinking back this far. Thanks old age. But the fact that so many people maintain Lazenby played himself in the film does lend some credence that somewhere, at some time, this gag appeared in some movie/tv show.

HA! Nice catch, but it wasn't in the Nude Bomb as released. That version appeared in in a direct to TV release. It's out there somewhere. It was an "alternative cut". I'd heard rumors for years that this was the case. Oddly, in all the times I've met George at various shows here in L.A., I've never thought to ask him about it.

BTW - I too, being a fan of Max, saw it as well in the theater. No CONTROL or 99 left me bummed but Max was Max and Don is the one and only. I will say that I did enjoy the newest. It was fun IMO and Carrel did a fine job as Max. Kind of hoped for a sequel.
