I think audiences today would be more willing to do with Tracy dying, than audiences were back then. I think if they had left the death for the next film , it could have worked.
I believe Hunt was strongly in the running for FYEO, it just didn't happen. Hunt and Terrence Young are my favorite Bond directors. What a delightful man he seemed to be. I love listening to the OHMSS audio track.

To be brutally honest though, his post-Bond work displayed little of the flair he did on OHMSS, so he may not of been the asset to the series people think.

I strongly disagree. Gold is a very taut, accomplished and exciting movie. It's also shamefully underrated. Hunt gets a better performance out of Roger Moore in the movie than any Bond director managed and, for that reason alone, it's a shame he didn't direct one of Moore's Bond movies.

I cannot seem to recall at this moment but...

Why did Peter Hunt not direct another Bond film? The OHMSS DVD commentary track beautifully reveals his great care, love, and flair for Bond storytelling. It is curious and ultimately sad that he did not direct another film.

I suspect he had a considerable hand in Lazenby getting the job (probably because he was a little keen on Lazenby), and Lazenby was a disaster for the producers (completely unprepared to work on a major film). My guess is Hunt got the dump for Lazenby's behaviour, his fault or no. He shot OHMSS well though, for what it's worth.

Maybe not, but it would have been interesting to find out.
