The blood could easily have been mistaken for cranberry sauce.
It had a jellied thickness to it, and combined with the fragments of brain matter engulfed in it, it created the illusion of a fruity quality. Upon first entering the room, one might have suspected a family dinner gone sour: a bowl or dish filled with the substance snatched up from the table and thrown against the wall in anger, leaving it to slowly slide down the yellowed wallpaper.
