Look what I came across today

Rumor is running around that there may be a HD-DVD release next year of The Avengers TV show in france... starting with the Tara King season.

I was worried about whether or not I may one day have to re-buy The Saint starring Roger Moore in HD or Blu Ray. This development may not have any bearing on that.

Why would they start with the Tara King season of The Avengers? The smart move is to start with the Diana Rigg seasons and, if they sell, you do the others. Only hard-core Avengers fans will buy this.

Don't ask why, they have a history of always doing stupid things. Here's hoping they are uncut (the french cut episodes on DVD when they would not find the corresponding french dubbing in the past releases).

Any further news on the series coming to HD or a restoration? I have been in contact with A&E a bit about this series and also The Saint, The Persuaders!. If I hear anything I will be sure to post.

I would not hold my breath for quite a while. I think that many studios that have been releasing HD DVDs are rethinking their stradegy since WB announced it is going totaly Blu Ray in April.

The end of the Hi Def format war is close to an end, with Blu Ray in the lead.

More new, the series will be released on HD-DVD AND BLU RAY !
First season released will be Emma Peel color, sometime before summer.
They apparently will release worldwide, so expect a US/UK version.

The sources I've read agree. A release on both formats beginning with Season 5.

As to why there was talk of Tara King first, that season is popular in France, even more so than the Emma Peel episodes. For whatever reason they really took to Tara King.

While I would love to see The Avengers on HD-DVD considering I don't have it on DVD at all currently, I am hesitant to buy it if it's only season sets when they will likely end up packaging the entire series some day. Although I am really only interested in the Peel-King years.

I would welcome this especially if they will clean up and restore the prints as The Avengers has really suffered over the years on video for the most part as far as the color years go. The black and white episodes seem to look pretty well, but the color years leave something to be desired compared with, say, The Saint or The Man From UNCLE from the same era.
