This would have been his and Seller's 3rd Panther film together.
Hmmm... Clouseau replacing Mathis, perhaps?

At least we have Clive Owen as 006 in Steve Martin's version.

Ah, the possibilities... Casino Royale would've been so much better if it only had Niven as Bond and Sellers as French Inspector Clouseau. Or dare I even say Sean as Bond. James Bond...

Actually, he was approached by producer Charles K. Feldman after claiming he would leave the EON series after Thunderball, but Connery asked for $1,000,000, more than what Feldman was willing to pay, so the deal fell through, and Connery went on to slouch around the screen in a grey jumpsuit in You Only Live Twice.

I'm fine with Niven. Besides, Niven and Sellers work well together.

"You got your Niven in my Sellers."

Family grotto, by the lake of Minnesota. (Where we're all full of

"But, of course you are."

I was watching my Pink Panther DVD, and had the trivia track and commentary on, and both mentioned how Blake Edwards was offered to re-write and direct Casino Royale with David Niven and Peter Sellers, and it had me thinking, what if? I mean, if Blake Edwards had done it, chances are it wouldnt have been dated as badly as it was, and chances are it would have had the Inspector in it. So I was wondering if anyone had info into how far Edwards went into the movie before the studio chose someone else, I mean with Edwards, chances are he had a plot already set up. Also, what do you all think of this if it would have happened.
I'd imagine it would have been more or less the same sort of film. The choice of director (and multiple changes of them) wasn't the only factor that screwed up CASINO ROYALE '67 - it was a myriad of factors...Peter Sellers attitude to working at the time, the studios panic over the real Bond franchise gaining audience momentum before them, a film that shouldn't frankly have been made.... I can go on, but Blake Edwards being a sole director probably wouldn't have saved the film from what it became.

Yes, and Feldman later said that it would have been cheaper to just pay Connery the $1Million and make a normal BOnd movie than the overbudget hijinks he did make.

Well, Connery would probably have given the same performance as Bond that he did when he actually accepted the offer of $1,000,000 to play the role; can you guess which film?

Okay, I'll make it easy for you: It involves diamonds.

His laid back performance was what really saves DAF from the fires of... oh, well... hell. We'll, it was also a funky 70's picture... which also saves alot.
You cant stay mad at Sean for warming the seat, so Roger would feel all warm and fuzzy, when he took the role of traveling comic; Jimmy Bond.

Some aspects of the film are quite stern, but with a clear comedy aspect running underneath, which makes me wonder if there was an original serious screenplay that was just adapted again and again and again.
Interestingly Peter Sellers thought he was being asked to play a serious James Bond, and even acted it that way; but little did he realise how bad his straight acting was...
The whole films a mess and Ive never watched it all the way through, its just too painful.
I think Blake Edwards and David Niven could have had a good crack at this as semi-serious Bond (lets remember by 1967 007 was almost a parody of himself already) with Orson Welles as Le Chiffre and Jacqueline Bisset as Vesper Lynd (well, she was in the movie and very beautiful in 1967). But knowing Blake Edwards it would probably have ended up more semi than serious...
