Until Casino Royale, he appeared in every other Bond movie. Even when Desmond Llewelyn wasn't playing him, he was played by Peter Burton in Dr. No (as Major Boothroyd), and as John Cleese in Die Another Day. So it seems odd that he'd be mysteriously missing from Live And Let Die. Anybody know the reasoning behind this? I heard somewhere it was because they wanted less gadgets in the film?

He was busy with a TV-serie at the time + Harry Saltzman didn't think it was necessary to have Q in the film (In practice, Saltzman produced LALD).

Also remember, Desmonds 'Q' wasn't that popular in the early 70s. His fame with Bond came later.

It was more about them wanting to distance the new Roger Moore Bond from the Connery Bond. So all the Connery cliches were thrown out (vodka martinis, shaken not stirred, Bond James Bond, he now smokes cigars and orders bourbon etc), and Q was thrown out too. The odd part is that they do in fact have a typical 'Q scene' in which a cool gadget is introduced, yet its Bond explaining the gadget to M, which is a bit silly. I mean, they're keeping the Q gadgets but not Q himself. Bah!

what i heard the guy wrote the screenplay based it on the book and there is no Q in it or any fleming books. He did not know that Q was suppose to be in every bond film, so he added Q in tmwgg. Supposely after the film came out, people kept on asking where is Q.

It was also hard to create a Q-scene because there was no scenes at MI-6. Maybe it would've been a little too much if M, Moneypenny AND Q visit Bond's home. I think it was right to leave Q out of this film. No big deal.

LALD is weird,and this is it's main strength IMO. Despite the Guy Hamilton camp,there's a genuinely eerie atmosphere permeating this film. For me it's Roger's finest hour.
The absence of Q doesn't bother me at all. I do,however,wish they had included the 'walled garden' PTS as described in another thread. It's a shame Bond is absent from the PTS.

I've read this many times (along with how Broccoli basically produced TMWTGG), but are there any more details available about this? In Roger Moore's "James Bond Diary," the actor poses with both Broccoli and Saltzman in a photo (taken during filming of the boat chase) and in the "Inside Live And Let Die" documentary, Broccoli can be seen in the archive footage as the crew prepares to film part of the chase. So, it's not like Broccoli was entirely absent from LALD.

dinovelvet is correct. It was to distance the Moore era from the Connery one, and so there is no black tuxedo or office briefing either. However, there were some protests from fans at the time, and so Q returned in TMWTGG.

For what it is worth, i always considered the guy that implants the chip in D. Craig's arm in the Bahamas to be a "Q". In the same way the non-Lewellyn Boythrood very early in the Connery era is (can't remember which one exactly right now - the one that gives him the PPK?). And in both instances they are pretty much mute and onscreen just for 20 secs.
