click on "Spinoff."

Since August, I've been expanding the episode review for episodes of The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. I still don't have all the episodes reviewed (it's tough going at times), but several more reviews are up.

So did you prefer Mary Ann Mobley or Stefanie Powers as April Dancer, Mr. Solo?

Stefanie Powers, but both were fine. Mobley had the better script (by Dean Hargrove) to work with. Unfortunately, Hargrove only wrote one episode of the GFU series and that was near the end of the one-and-only-season.

And do you prefer Noel Harrison or Norman Fell(talk about a 180 degree casting replacement! From Henry Higgins' son to Mr. Roper!) as Mark Slate?

Noel Harrison, a much easier call. Harrison suffered on the series, however, because the producers didn't want April to engage in much, if any, real fighting (a la Emma Peel or Honey West). As a result, Mark Slate basically had to take all the punishment for the UNCLE side. It looked, in some episodes, that Slate got pummeled all the time.

It also didn't help that some of the GFU writers managed to make both April and Mark look like dolts.

Watching some of the GFU episodes when they were on the American Life cable network recently reminded me of how bad some of those were. It's like they had some good ideas and things to work with, but chose to go down the goofy route and doomed the show.

Although I'm a huge UNCLE fan, I think I'll take a pass on GFU on DVD unless it comes out for a real cheap price. I just couldn't see watching it that often whereas the Man I can watch over and over.

To do the reviews, I've been watching GFU on AOL's In2TV feature (they have maybe 25 of the 29 episodes). Back in 1985-86, when CBN (now Disney Family channel) was showing UNCLE, they switched from MFU and GFU. I recorded the first five GFU's and then stopped. I just couldn't bring myself to watch anymore. A few years later, TNT showed a few because it was Stefanie Powers's birthday so I recorded those. After having viewed some more on In2TV, I'd say maybe a third are decent or better. But in most cases, it's been a long, hard slog to get through the episodes.
