Has anyone else read the books by "Dane Hartman"? If you're a Dirty Harry fanatic, then get these books. Sure, some of the action is more suited to other Clint films like The gauntlet and The Eiger Sanction (woof!), but since Clint does get a nice painted portrait per cover, and I doubt you'd imagine anyone else in the role (like many do for Bond novels) and there are a few references to stuff in the films, as there are the characters from the movies, too. Ge t'em used on Amazon or wherever, they're fun.

Watch this:

Absolute classic scene. :D

On the box set, they just did the "new digital transfer" thing & not a complete frame by frame restoration like Bond, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, etc. I'd love to see this kind of treatment for the Dirty Harry series. Warner was supposed to release high def versions to coincide with a Dirty Harry video game that was due this year. Unfortunately, the game was cancelled for now & it looks like the high def DVD's are also in limbo for the time being.

Watch this:

Or this:

Warning video quality not as good. Note that Siegel and Eastwood make an in-joke with a theater marque advertising "Play Misty For Me."

Man from Japan, Magnum Force was of course made because of the success of the first and foremost, but as a screenplay, it's tries to apologise for all the things that the original got slammed for.

DH faces cops who are a crazier fanatical version of him : helps clear that DH is not a fascist as everyone said in 1971. "I'm afraid you misjudged me" is a direct response to the critics. Also DH have a home life and sex life, something we never saw in the original. That makes him more like other screen heroes, and less like in the first, where the character's only function was to get the bad guy. The head of the organisation being the chief also turns down the tables, in an era where counter culture was king, Magnum Force is the liberal hippie version of the original film cop version ie it's made to please the spirit of the times, whereas the first was seen as some fascistic, conservative anti liberal cop movie. People said Eastwood was fascist because he killed the peace sign holding Scorpio Killer. They didn't care that Scorpio raped and killed kids : all they saw was that he wore a peace sign, and the guy who killed him was a costumed cop. That was enough, hence Magnum Force, which clears where DH is standing politically.

Now on the other hand, at least, this sequel brings some different light to the character. It was made for another purpose than just cash-in.

Thanks for clarifying your points. I agree with you. I was under the impression you were saying that the film was made for artistic reasons. Warners wanted a sequel first, then there would have been thought about how best to approach one artistically.

Dirty Harry and Magnum Force are great little films, but after that things got a bit mediocre

The Enforcer and The Dead Pool are films I find merely 'enjoyable'.

However Sudden Impact is a shocker, mainly because of the whole 'killing is an okay response to rape' plot, which I had a big problem with. I also didn't think Callahan was well suited to being out of San Francisco.

Agreed, but Clint do give us our DH in SF movie, only it's 40mn long this time.

Remember on the docks, after his boss tells him to piss off to San Paulo ? The camera goes up, and the end Lalo Shifring score plays, exactly like the end of 1,2 and 5. It is used by Clint to make us understand "now you got your DH regular I kill crooks crap, let's try something different now". I think this move is brilliant, (but not really noted by the fans, I have yet to read a review pointing that).

In 'Magnum Force' Hal Holbrook played Lt Briggs. Then in 'The Enforcer' Bradford Dillman played Capt McKay. But in 'Sudden Impact' Bradford Dillman played Capt Briggs! I always wondered why nobody noticed.

Well, it can be passed off as being a different "Briggs". They could (and should) have used a different name though to avoid any confusion. That said, I've seen all the films several times and never noticed the name re-appearing myself.

Is he meant to be Dirty Henry or Dirty Harold? Neither sounds right but I am assuming Harry is short for something.

Nope, just Harry. Short for Harold, I suppose.

Last name should have been "Bastard." Dirty Harry Bastard.

In the french dubs, Harry is called "Callahan" in all the movies...

Except the Enforcer, where for some reason, everyone calls him "Callaghan".

Were these people dumb or what ?

Dirty Harold.

Doesn't quite have the same ring about it, does it? Although, I admit, Dirty Harold Bastard would be most satisfying.

Looks like the wait is almost over. The new Dirty Harry Ultimate Collector's Edition is being released on June 3rd in dvd and Blue Ray editions:

http://www.amazon.co...e...0961&sr=8-5

While I can't see where it says the films have digitally remastered on the Amazon page, I believe that's a given. At last! I've been waiting to buy these movies for years!

"How very stylish."

Did anyone know that along with Frank Sinatra, that Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and John Wayne were all up for the role before Clint?

Also, Dirty Harry has also inspired an alcoholic beverage.
This drink consists of 2 parts Southern Comfort, 1 part Kahlua, and 3/4 part of Creme de Cacao. The drink is served over ice in a tumbler glass.

I haven't tried the drink yet, but will have to the next time I go out.

A "Girl Drink" for Dirty Harry Callahan??? Heck, even Scorpio ordered a bottle of Seagram's 7 before bashing the liquor store clerk with it! In the Dirty Harry book, "Death On the Docks", Callahan drinks Johnnie Walker Red Label Scotch. His policeman's salary can't afford Johnnie Walker Black...

BTW, Schifrin's eighties-funk score for SUDDEN IMPACT is due out May 6, 2008:

I dunno, but I hope that they're going to restore the films like they did with the Bond movies. I only have the first two movies from the first batch of DVDs, and while those transfers are acceptable--at least to me and my no-def system--I'll buy only after reading the comments from those of you who get their sets first.
