Just wondering what people here know of or have in regards to Thunderball footage other than what is on the UE DVD. I've seen the french interviews with Connery & Claudine Auger in cannes from 1965 on youtube. But wondered if there was any other coverage from the time, be it interviews, newsreel or other behind the scenes footage?

Many thanks

Duncan

Who knows what is out there? The only way I know that you might find other footage is to look at laser disk or other regions DVD's and earlier DVD too.

There's footage shot by Ken Adam on 16 mm. Don't know how much there is in total, and not sure if any of this stuff made it on the UE discs, I saw it as part of a documentary on KA for German television as he had donated a few bits and pieces from his personal archive especially for this docu.

Can't find my DVD right now, but I do remember that there was stuff from YOLT, building the volcano set in Pinewood, but also on location in Japan on the real volcano (with Connery doing bodybuilding poses with funny faces), but also from TB, such as tests with the Disco Volante and some fooling around at the Caf

Yeah, some of this made it onto the UE, But I reckon there must be a lot more. The Ultimate editions were butcher jobs in my opinion.

The fascinating 1967 YOLT Whickers World reduced to a few minutes, Ken Adams fims reduced to highlights, the making of Spy who loved me from 1977 - just a few clips used, the original Diamonds documentary missing, edited Sean Connery Diamonds interview, Roger Moore and Herve Villechaize interview on Harty butchered to the point where it is unwatchable. I could go on but I was hugely disappointed by the UE discs. A massively wasted opportunity :D

Sadly, they will no doubt have wanted to hold back at least 'some' material for another future wave of DVD releases probably when the 7th James Bond gets sworn into office about 5 years from now. My personal disdain was the lack of an option to watch the films with some of the better deleted scenes put back in (LTK especially).

You can always make your fan edit of LTK. My guess is longer documentaries may appear on the Blue Ray disc next year... probably at the expense of other material included in the UE (ie you will have to keep both !)

The Ed Sullivan show visited the set in the Bahamas in April of 1965. Some silent footage of that was being sold on Ebay about a year ago. All this stuff should be on the Blu Ray version of the film.....I hope. Like the Cannes stuff etc. What about all the talk shows of the era? Some of it must still exist.
If the current discs sell well enough, they will keep improving them.

I have read in my copy of the JAMES BOND ENCYCLOPEDIA that original scenes for Thunderball ran for 270 mins and were edited to 130. Those 140 mins must be out there somewhere. I'd love to get my hands on them.

Can't remember the name (did I ever ask it?) - but I think he was one of the underwater crew - when I was talking to him (Pinewood or the NEC? My memory is getting worse) mentioned in passing that he had (then) recently approached Eon with some "home movie" (I assume either 8mm or 16mm) behind the scenes footage of the underwater sequences. This was too late for the UE editions, so I assume that it may well be on the blue-ray version.

I think that was actually YOLT.

According to what I've read, there weren't that many outtakes during the early years of the series since budgets were pretty limited and they couldn't afford to waste film. And what they did cut was supposedly discarded. Who knew anybody would want to see that kind of thing back in those days, unless Peter Hunt decided to keep them somewhere in his archive or Eon has them stashed somewhere, which I highly doubt. That's why in things like the TB documentary Patrick Macnee says a few photos are all that's left of Bond's tour of the Disco Volante while he's at Palmyra.

As far as other things, with the coverage these films during that period I am sure there are a lot of forgotten or undiscovered items. We are more likely to see those on You Tube than further DVD releases, though. The licensing rights to these things is a lot more complicated when it comes to selling it than to share it.

It has been written that Peter Hunt said when editing began on Thunderball, that it was running 4 hours. A lot of that might be attributed to the underwater footage though. There must have been a lot of that to edit. There's only a couple of deleted scenes that i know of though.

Is there any discussion of releasing the Bond canon on Blu-Ray? Other than CR I haven't seen anything.

Here is the post on the Blu ray versions.
http://debrief.comma...showtopic=45322

I love Thunderball. It's one of my favorites of the series. I just watched it recently and also had read the fact that it was much longer and trimmed down in post production. In fact, Peter Hunt refilmed some scenes as Terrance Young had left the film to start another project? Perhaps why he was not brought back again? I also noticed watching this time that there is a lot of cuts and jumping from one scene and back. Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like there was a lot of cutting back and forth at times with the film?

again. i love the film as it is. I just had never noticed this before. I've seen the film a lot.

On deleted scenes, I only know of the "The things I do for England" one in the trailer as well as the scenes with Bond looking over the Disco with Largo. they have stated that the Disco scene is missing though and only the pictures of the scene are known to exist.. I think these are shown in the brief Patrick Macnee doc on the DVD. There is also a different underwater fight scene sequence on the new UE Thunderball DVD.

What are the other known deleted scenes? It would be cool to see these on the next series of releases. I'm hoping Thunderball is in the first set of Blu Ray discs, in October or so.

Great topic!!

If my memory serves me correctly I think it's only alternate shots and shots that didn't make it into the final cut. Also I think there is some alternate angles aswell. Pretty Interesting, I recommend you check it out.

The footage is a special feature on Disc 2. You can compare it to the main feature on Disc 1.

Despite the comprehensive amount of footage on the Ultimate Edition DVDs, some footage was not included. For example, a 3 minute theatrical trailer of On Her Majesty's Secret Service has not been included since it's 25th Anniversary UK VHS release.
