I am sure most of you have been wondering for ages if someone, be it Leslie Bricusse, Hal David, or even Monty Norman himself, perhaps threw together some lyrics during the post-production phase of Dr. No.
Well, after a bit of inspiration from Mr, Wade, as well as one of those long, dark nights of the soul one gets every so often in a while, I put pen to ink (or, more literally, fingers to keys) and came up with this bit of verse.
These lyrics aren’t copyrighted; I just threw them together a couple of weekends ago accorded to what scanned best from the theme, and I’m afraid it sounds more John Drake than James Bond. These verses, however, are not intended to be anything but a poem, a so-called (if I may use the term) “ode to the character of James Bond”. (All this is my way of avoiding any lawsuits. I make no claims on any original tune and assert no rights other than those as the author of these verses.) Should they, however, as you read them in your head, sound oh-so-familiar and musical, well, what of it?

Enjoy, and do feel free to comment.

JB (LIVE AS A STRANGER)
By Matthew Blanchette
Honor!
Danger!
Live as a stranger!
On the service,
None are nervous…
I follow Her Majesty; to not’d be a travesty
For I hallow my work by granting no enemies amnesty;
Though other girls may beckon,
When the Queen comes out a-reckoning,
I always heed Her call!
Watch out for my gaze, if you e’er be a stranger;
Life is a mind maze, and your life is in danger,
Allegiances swirl,
My fragile mind comes unfurled:
I see the world, and
Want it all!
For my country,
I will serve Her…
Living the life of spycraft
Isn’t an easy task;
Dealing with death and destruction,
I must wear a mask.
Cruelty is my callsign,
Malice my cage,
But, if you aren’t a stranger,
I’ll let loose my rage!
Darting to look behind,
Killing without aside,
One step, and I’ll be done,
Fate becomes intertwined…
Honor!
Danger!
Live as a stranger!
In the shadows
Lies great danger…
Taking no chances, I will make my advances;
Being careful for trouble, I will spare no one glances:
In the shadows tonight,
I’ll be out risking my life
Under a dreary London sky!
So, think of me now when you veer into slumber:
As you know my name; therefore, you now know the number,
So, come, pay the price,
Because you only live twice:
Once when you’re born and
When you die!
Living the life…
Paying the price…
Slipping away…
Back into the…
NIGHT!
