Connery follows Moore in Bond battle

18.01.08 Alison Flood and Hannah Davies

James Bond legends Sean Connery and Roger Moore will go head to head with rival books this autumn, after Weidenfeld cajoled Connery into telling his story, and Michael O'Mara won the battle for Moore's memoirs.

Connery had initially been signed by HarperCollins to write his autobiography, but pulled out in 2005 after reluctance to discuss certain areas of his private life. A chance encounter at the Edinburgh Festival between Weidenfeld publisher Alan Samson and Connery's co-writer, Murray Grigor, led to Samson signing Connery's Being a Scot, for publication on 25th August.

Billed as "an intensely personal account", the book will fuse Connery's own experiences, including his acting career, with his efforts to track down what Scots have given to the world in art, science and sport. "Sean Connery is not calling it an autobiography but it's probably the nearest we will get to it," said Samson. "He's a legend

Fascinating read, indeed. And we can all rest assured the book will not be bowdlerized or gussied up: by all accounts, Rog has been a class act all his life.

A very nice cover, that's one of my favourite shots of Rodge as Bond.

I'm a bit surprised at that cover actually, considering how Moore has often said how he considers his life after Bond to be significantly more important (to himself and others). Still, I like it it anyway!

Yes, great picture. The cover is more to do with the publishers and it ties in nicely with the title anyway.

I assume the cover image is allowed to be used considering it includes the 007-gun logo.

This isn't The Battle for Bond. I'm pretty sure permissions for copywritten content were asked for & granted.

Well, they are trying to sell books. As far as bios go, it's actually a pretty strong cover.

Keep your eyes on the CBn main page in the next few weeks guys. This book may just end up in a competition on there.

Eye, Cap'n: A Roger Moore Special

It’s hard to believe that Sir Roger Moore is 80 because he’s as sharp as a knife and as self-mocking as ever.

"I was sitting next to Michael Winner’s fiancée at a party recently," he tells me, "and I couldn’t remember her name.

"But she turned and said ‘don’t worry at all. We can’t remember things because we have so much information in our brains at this age it just takes longer for them to come forward," he laughs.

And while he may always have one eyebrow raised, Sir Roger is ridiculously modest to an irritating degree...

My copy of this turned up Yesterday. I had quick flick through to see if he'd mention one thing and he did. Breifly during WW2 he was evacuated to this part of England and it has always been rumoured that he spent a short time at my old school, Launceston College in Cornwall. His book confirmed a short stay there, so it's nice to learn that all those unconfirmed rumours were true.

I'm currently watching Roger on Jonathan Ross over on BBC One. He told us that the only reason he didn't write his autobiography earlier was that:

"I am scared of writing about people I know, so I had to wait untill they are all dead!"

:(

God he's a saucy bugger!

Ross: [Reffering to lighting candle on cake/pork pie] I hate it when it (the flame) goes up!
Moore: I wish I knew!

Ross: Make a wish and blow the candle out!
Moore: Oh Yes, I'm good at blowing! :)

Love this guy! Definately gonna pick this one up as soon as possible!

Roger Moore FTW!! :)

My Limited edition copy arrived from Hatchards a couple of days ago. Its beautifully presented however i was a little disappointed in the cover, a silver and black silhouette of Roger in a dinner suit, overall very bland. The gun on the inside cover was a nice touch though.
