Steven Sondheim's masterpiece, SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET, is finally coming to the screen. To say I'm a SWEENEY TODD fan would be an understatement... it might be my favorite thing, well, ever. It's a brilliant work of musical storytelling (and has been widely performed both as a musical and an opera).

Under the hand of Burton, with the cast of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sascha Baron Cohen, and Alan Rickman, it's been brought to life in all of its brutal and gothic glory.

Indeed.

Judging from the trailer, I'd say this has a great chance of being Burton's masterpiece. Given the excellent script (which is usually what lets Burton down), Sondheim's masterful score, and the performances of a fantastic cast, I don't see how it could really go wrong.

And for those concerned about SWEENEY being a musical... well, you've never seen a musical like SWEENEY TODD.

The film is going to be rated R. A strong R, from what I understand, since Burton isn't holding back on the violence. It's a horror musical after all, and contains a lot of blood (numerous throat slittings... I think six or so). Thematic elements also include rape, incestual overtones, cannibalism...

What can I say? It's a very dark, disturbing tale, and will be Burton's darkest film to date.
