How did you all think of him when he was Bond in 1987? Did your opinion change of him later on?

I LOVED Dalton from the first opening scene of TLD, in fact that movie was the last time I really felt satisfied walking out of a BOnd move (until Casino Royale). To this day I still wish he had done a few more Bond films - I think GE would have been much better with Dalton than it was with Brosnan.

I thought he was great. Still do. I remember the first still I saw of him as Bond was from the Vienna press conference with Maryam d'Abo, and the photo must've been taken in mid-laugh as his expression indicated. I still have that photo somewhere.
By the way, welcome to CBn.

Seeing TLD & LTK in the theaters I thought he was superb. Casino Royale was great therapy for me in that it was more like a Dalton Bond movie.

Agreed. At the time, I can recall thinking that Dalton's portrayal of Bond was terrific (and I still do). I think that both TLD and LTK have their issues that keep them from the very top of my list. But those issues really have little or nothing to do with Dalton.

I was thrilled with most of what Dalton did as Bond. I was looking forward to his third film, especially since it was reported that new screenwriters and a new director would be hired. I thought the Wilson/Maibaum/Glen films were feeling too routine.

I was uncertain going into TLD how I'd like him. In the first ten minutes I knew. I'd found James Bond. To be sure, I've been comfortable with all the actors who've played the part, and I think Craig's marvellous in the role, but Dalton captures perfectly the essential contradictions of Bond. He's a hard man with a soft center, but also a romantic figure with a core of steel. Others will have their particular favorites, but for me, Timothy Dalton is Bond.

I saw TLD and LTK in the cinema and, to be honest, I wasn't impressed. First, I didn't have the foggiest who this bloke was at the time, secondly, I've never found him attractive at all. In fact the only women I've ever come across to find Dalton attractive are here, on this forum. However my opinion of him completely changed as I got older. I don't see the much vaunted coldness that people talk about, and find him rather soft and sweet as Bond, but it turns out he's a really, really nice bloke in real life too. He's a gentleman, Roger Moore style, and as discussed in another thread, this has affected the way I see his films. I have come to like them for other reasons too but Dalton himself is probably the main one and I too would have liked to have seen more DaltonBond films.
