Is this Faulks fellow a good author and a good choice?

YES and YES!

A literate yet story driven novelist, his writing is fine and sometimes exquisite. He belongs to a tradition of contemporary English/Anglo-centric writers that I love (Julian Barnes, Graham Swift, Pat Barker, Kazuo Ishiguru, William Boyd etc). I have not read all of his books, just the famous ones, Birdsong, Charlotte Gray and On Green Dolphin Street. He was too high brow and successful for me to even contemplate him writing Bond but, rest assured, at least IMHO, he is a great choice. He is the Daniel Craig of Bond authors - in the best possible sense. This book is going to be a smash. This is extraordinarily good news.

Whew, okay, now that I have a moment...

I don't know this Faulks feller, but if ACE says he's the "Daniel Craig of Bond authors" that's all I need to hear. And I trust those folks at IFP. They seem to know what they are doing.

Doesn't surprise me in the least that it's set in Fleming's timeline. I would have been shocked if it wasn't.

Title is good. Doesn't blow me away...but it's good.

On the one hand, I'm glad they've made an announcement and we know what to look forward to. On the other, I think I liked it better when we knew nothing except that there would be a book out next year. Having a vague entity out there, that we would get "someday," is easier to put in the back of my mind, and concentrate on other things. But now, all I can do is wait, and wait, and wait.... (shades of Casablanca )

His spoof Fleming short story (which appeared in "Pistache") is funny as hell, but I thought also revealed a certain amount of affection for Fleming's writing. Worth checking out.

He also wrote the non fiction book "The Fatal Englishman" which would be a bloody brilliant title for a Bond book, if he hadn't already used it obviously.

The title is good. Will take some getting used to, but is good. Dont know much about this Faulks fellow, but I expect a gritty dark book from him. Great news!

Looked up devil may care on wikipedia, got this: Heedless of caution; reckless.

And this news - set during the Cold War and involved espionage across two continents in "several of the world's most thrilling cities".

Possibly New York City and Stockholm?

Have we ruled out a 00 licence acquiring story?

"Devil May Care" is set in 1967 when Faulks said "Bond is damaged, ageing and in a sense it is the return of the gunfighter for one last heroic mission."

"He has been widowed and been through a lot of bad things ... He is slightly more vulnerable than any previous Bond but at the same time he is both gallant and highly sexed if you can be both. Although he is a great seducer, he really does appreciate the girls he seduces and he doesn't actually use them badly."

Well one news story I read made it seem like this is Bond coming out for one last adventure.

I hope it's not the case because I've never really liked that idea. I'd rather play a Splinter Cell game and watch The Rock (Connery ftw) for the over-the-hill secret agent kicking . Bond is ageless.

I'm not at all familiar with the author, but I am really excited now that this info has been released. It makes the release of this novel more real to me and I have a really good feeling about it.

From the sound of the plot (if it's true), it could possibly be a cool film (adapted for present day of course...) for Craig to close out his tenure with.

It'd have to be a huge seller so I'll say, "probably not so good". It's not a good option for EON to buy up rights to a Bond book when they could just have their own writers write an original script. It'd be cheaper. The only thing the rights to the book would do for Bond is bring in name recognition and Bond doesn't need that. Casino Royale had Fleming going for it and I'm not so sure that Fleming really brought anything to the overall BO performance. Mainly it was new Bond and really good reviews that brought in the viewers.

Of course you never know... but given EON they'd rather be inspired by a piece here and a piece there and then a homage or so much like Colonel Sun got with Die Another Day.

They did this Penguin 007 thing back in 2002 I think when they relaunched the Fleming books, didn't they? Something similar anyway...
