The conference room at Vauxhall Cross was packed with men and woman in expensive suits and ties, listening emotionally as M stood at the front of the room, briefing the MI6 staff on the terrorist known as Saladin. Michael Viveter sat in the back of the room, pretending to repeatedly shoot himself in the temple with his thumb and forefinger.
