I read the following in a British paper (Sunday Mercury) dating from about 6 weeks ago. It seems rather vague (and hence, dubious), but I was wondering if anyone has read this anywhere else.

SHERLOCK Holmes is being dragged out of retirement for one last case.
But not as you might recognise the dogged detective from 221b Baker Street.
A new movie based on a comic book (aren't they all these days?) casts new light on him.

He'll be an all-action hero, complete with a sword hidden inside his cane.
Add to that a bout of bare-knuckle boxing and Moriarty will be quaking in his boots.

Timothy Dalton's one of the names being bandied about.

It's all being approved by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, so things shouldn't get out of hand.

They don't give any source and it sounds kind of like b.s. But it's the only casting rumor I've heard about him lately.

(Wouldn't he make a good Moriarty, though?)

More than likely.

Mind you, he was supposed to play Holmes about fifteen years ago in Richard Franklin's aborted film version of 'Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula' which would have co-starred Christopher Walken as Dracula, and Phil Collins :cooltongue: as Dr. Watson.

So, you never know...

Phil Collins as Dr. Watson?!?!
I thought the only 'acting' experience he had was as a screaming teenager in A Hard Day's Night...

Well then, here's some fresher news that, while not about casting per se, seems to me to imply future projects for Tim...

http://www.hollywood...14ce62963874068

Key line: "For the former Pax Network, the programming deal with RHI, run by the famed Halmi father-son team, will bring up to 24 original movies and miniseries at a rate of two a month..."

I don't know why he put in an appearance at this event, but I would guess it's because he will probably be appearing in future TV projects for this company (as he has in the past).

Tim Dalton has worked quite a lot with the Halmi's in the past. Scarlett, Cleopatra and Hercules were all Halmi productions.

As for the original topc of this thread, I think TD would be excellent as either Holmes or Moriaty though I like the idea of Moriaty better .

You know what would be cool? A revisionist version of Sherlock Holmes, if someone hasn't already done it. One where Moriarty is the good guy and Holmes is the bad guy.

They're making a revionist version of Robin Hood called "Nottingham" where the Sherriff of Nottingham is the good guy. (starring Russel Crowe)

Halmi should cast him as Ming in that new Flash Gordon series.

Wow, that would be something. I love Sherlock Holmes, and I love Timothy Dalton. That's a lot of love. That is the best rumour I've heard since speculation in 2005 for the Joker in "The Dark Knight." It was romoured that Mark Hammill was in the running for the Joker, which was probably 100% untrue. The part ultimately went to Heath Ledger. And I can't wait for that either. But Dalton as Holmes, love it. And, yes, he would also make a great Moriarity

Gently, gently...let's not get excited.

A major studio-backed big budget franchise relaunch of Sherlock Holmes is NOT going to star Timothy Dalton. He just isn't a big enough name, and he's 63 years old. Whoever it is, its going to be more along the lines of Christian Bale and Daniel Craig.

Here's the original article :

Oh, I'm not getting that excited... as I said, the story I quoted sounded suspiciously vague.

Dalton is of supporting-role age now anyway.

However, I hate to say it but I think Hot Fuzz is "it" for the time being. Just because this seems to have been the pattern of Dalton's career since the very start. He does TV and theater stuff and then every few years (with the exception of Bond, his biggest role), he shows up in a film, and sometimes it's a cult hit. Hot Fuzz = Flash Gordon. (Which is coming out on DVD in a special edition this summer, by the way!)

I'd love to be wrong, though. But I don't see the trajectory of his career changing much. He made a deliberate choice to turn down films early on in his career and he probably could have been a huge film star (who might have burned out quickly?) if he hadn't done that. There's a price you pay for that kind of dedication to your craft. However, the benefit he has gotten is that he is still working and still surprising audiences with his talent. Clearly, he still has many more good projects in him.

Always on the lookout for new Dalton projects, I came across this little blurb and was wondering if anyone else had heard about it. Is this for real?

meh, that sounds absoloutly terrible, i'm sorry guys, but it does. i prefered the old Sherlock Holmes, he was fine the way he was, just a detective solving cases, but i think they are making a big mistake making him into a 'All Round Action Hero' :cooltongue:. But if a movie was made using the old style Holmes character, then Dalton would be first choice.

Anyway, I happen to know that Dalton's had quite a few offers since Hot Fuzz came out. So, we might hear about another project in the not too distant future. :cooltongue:

Yes, yes, yes! Love Tim and always have. Same with Holmes. To have TD play Holmes will be wonderful. Here's to a great new series. I hope.
