At least I will just see it as an entertaining fantasy film with an interesting colour to it.

Aren`t perhaps people thinking way too much into this?

Maybe, maybe not. I guess it depends on the person. The source material for the movie is considered to be pretty controversial by some (it's banned in some schools for example). And personally, I always enjoy intelligent debates where people express well thought-out points of view.
Besides, we are on a forum where people derive enjoyment from dissecting every single detail of a character named Bond. And he has very little to do with religious beliefs.

I find myself wondering if he can pull off this part. He seems like he should do OK, but I don't know if he was the best choice for the role.

In the novel Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig's character)and Mrs Coulter sacrificed themselves by taking Metatron down with them, falling in the Abyss as ghosts for eternity.
Yeah that happened to me the other day too.

Who would be near the top of your list for the role (I'm taking it that you're more familiar with the series than I am).

As for Lord Asriel, you need someone who is very aristocratic, athletic, stern, intense and sexy (I suppose) - someone who might actually remind you of Lucifer. Lord Asriel overpowers the story even when he is not in the scenes on the page. Asriel is not evil, but he is a rebel against heaven in the way that Lucifer was. Think of a Timothy Dalton type circa the mid 1980s (think: The Doctor and the Devils). Yeah, there was a reason why Dalton got the part in the stage version. (Not that I think he should have been cast for the film -- naturally they would want someone younger, more of a box office draw, etc and there are lots of actors to choose from.)
I'm sure Daniel Craig will do fine, but while I think he has the athletic and sexy parts down, he doesn't remind me of an aristocrat or someone really, really arrogant and upper-class. And he also seems slightly young for the part. Those piercing baby blues will help in the intensity department, though. But that's why it's called acting, so who knows? I may be pleasantly surprised.
Gosh I am trying to think of someone who would be a more obvious fit. I always saw Lord Asriel as being dark haired, but I can't recall if that was actually in the book or not.

i don't suppose one of the very talented souls on this board could make a wallpaper out of those images could they?
Actually there are some nice wallpapers at the official site. They're not too bad. In the meantime, I'm curious to see the new poster when I get it in the mail. It should make a nice decoration.

Maybe I've seen too many videos reading 'and Eric Roberts', in which Eric appears for a minute or two. But how long would you expect Dan to appear on screen here? I'm guessing twenty minutes or so. Am I off--if so, by how much?

Experts: what does 'and Daniel Craig' mean? That's how the trailer I saw billed him, which indicates to me an...extended cameo or strong but shortish supporting role.

He`s said, that his part only becomes bigger in the third film, which was good, because otherwise he wouldn`t be able to do it - for time schedule reasons.

As an example, Sean Connery was billed as 'and Sean Connery' in the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade titles. I'm hoping we see Craig in a very substantial role here.

It's too early to know but if this film should tank, would it fall on Craig's shoulders or Nicole Kidman's like The Invasion? Who's the "star" of this film?
The material is. But Kidman and the little girl (should) have the most screen time, if that's what you're asking.

...and No DC is not the star, since he only has left a couple of scenes, after they cut off scenes from the ending.

On another note, I'm wondering whether this will be a successful cinematic venture as far as quality is concerned (I have no doubt it will bring int he bucks. THE GOLDEN COMPASS will likely make a decent film, but it gets hard to adapt SUBTLE KNIFE, and AMBER SPYGLASS needs a serious overhaul to work as a film.
