Being as Benson belives in Single-0 agents, did they exist in the original Fleming novels? And even if they didn't, should they be introduced in films?

No, but there was a Single-0 agent mentioned in Amis' Colonel Sun. Bond was planning to play piquet with his friend agent 016 of Station B (Berlin).

So, should they have single-0 agents in the films? I think they should, they should start doing films based on Benson's books.

Does anybody know what a single-0 agent would be licensed for? I remember a comedian once joking that he was "Single-0-7, Licensed to really hurt your feelings"

Maybe because he was of the opinion that as that number used 2 digits, only 1 zero could be used. As in: 008, 009, 010, 011,...and so on?Originally posted by Mister Asterix

Interesting theory BC. I know it doens't really change much, but at the start of The World is not Enough the chap in the photo which Bond holds up is 0012.

i don't really put much stock in the films take of the 00 agents. 003 and 004 have been killed and reappeared and 009 is killed and named by his number in octopussy and reappears in TWINE to shoot renard.
I've always been of the understanding in Fleming's novel's that 00 number's were assigned by the order they were awarded. and there is a 0011 in one of Fleming's novels, i'd have to check... He's a member of the 00 section and believed missing for two months in Singapore.

I think numbers are reassigned, so saying that 004 was killed and reappeared doesn't mean that he was ressurected. He was just replaced.

For the most part, and I'm going by memory here so there may be slight inaccuracies, the various agents seemed to have three-digit numbers. The exceptions would be 0011 and Bond's temporary number in "You Only Live Twice", which was 7777.

I think we have to look at this from two views, the novel's explanation, and how it is in the movies.
In the novels, Ian Flemings at least, there were three agents. 007, 011, and I cant remember the third agent, 001 maybe?
As for the movies, they make it pretty clear that their are just nine agents in the double-O section. 001, 002, 003, etc. etc.
Until the movies state otherwise, I'm gonna stay by the notion that their are nine double-O agents in the film series.
