This is a minor thing that has aggravated me since the first time I saw CR.

99% of you will think that it is inconsequential, but it does matter a bit to me.

You see, there are far too many lands and grooves in the barrel. Most folks will think 'Huh?', but that is the specific description of the rifling in a barrel, whether it is a handgun or a longgun. The rifling is what spirals down the barrel and gives it the appearance of a camera aperature.

I counted over twenty. Most barrels have no more than six to twelve.

I grump about this because it makes the image far too cluttered, especially when compared to Binder's original gunbarrel. Binder filmed down an actual barrel, as well. Even Kleinman's CG version for PB's films was more authentic, taking this into account.

I do love CR and can find little to complain about. I just had to get this off my chest. Thanks for letting a firearms enthusiast vent a bit.

Nice observation. Personally, I don't mind it that much, as it's all in the name of stylization :cooltongue:. I think the kaleidoscopic effect generated by the multiple Craig reflections makes up for the 20 grooves. Still, always fun to hear from a gun expert on this board

Yes, there are way too many. The S&W .38SPL that Binder photographed had 5 lands and grooves. Most auto's have 6 lands. I guess it was creative license to add that many in CR. Pretty stupid actually.

I agree, way too many. Unfortunately most of the people I have mentioned this to have no knowledge of firearms and respond with a "huh!, so what" not being able to understand my annoyance. Glad to see that there are others that know what I've been talking about.

Good catch, Stuart. I'm no pro. But as said above...artistic license. Probably meant to be a subliminal 'trigger' for the intensity of the moment.

Alomg with the dripping bl;ood, it was too cartoony looking, as if the designer of it had no idea what the inside of a gunbarrel looked like. Just awful and unwatchable (but then, this is a new series with a new character, so I guess one must get used to it)!

I honestly never noticed, but now that you mention it it's kind of ridiculous looking. Unless the contact had a rifle stashed in the bathroom somewhere...? :cooltongue:

All I can say is I'm glad I don't know that much about firearms. My ignorance seems to be bliss in this case.

Actually most rifles only have 2, 4, or 6 lands and grooves.

Take a look at the gunbarrel on Dr. No compaired to the later films. You can actually see the lands and grooves in the barrel. On the later films the image got so bad it looks b&w and 1 dimentional. Then Kleinman made the CGI Broz barrels look like the degraded gunbarrels. Here is a pic i took of a S&W M-19 4"bbl. .38spl revolver barrel with 6 lands and grooves. (And yes it was in bad shape). I used a pin hole plug over the camera lense, similar to how Maurice Binder did it.

Wow. Talk about ignorance is bliss. I never realized that the 007 gunbarrel logo looked even remotely like an actual gunbarrel, I thought it was pure fantasy anyway...

yeah, as I said take a look at the gunbarrel on Dr. No. It's much more detailed than the same image in the later films.

Totally agree.

I hope they now go back to the orignal style gun barrel. I really liked the one Klienman did for the Brosnan films. The original style, but made 3-D.

I really don't care if it resembles an actual gun barrel or not; it looks cool, that's all that I care about.

yes it is an artist's vision of a gunbarrel ,not a real one like the original ,but it works pretty well!
I do loved bond's reflection on the inside of the barrel, though I agree it's preposterous!!

Mr. *, if you look at my previous posts, I went over the most common land and grove patterns on handguns. Most .38 revolvers have 5 L&G's (as in the original gunbarrel shot by Binder), most 9 thru 45 pistols have 6 L&G's. Most rifles have 2,4,or 6 L&G's.

A handgun with over 20 L&G's would be crazy (as counted by Stuart). For one thing, there is no need, for another there would be too much contact with the bullet, which would slow it down considerably and cause excessive heat. Plus the twist rate of the CGI gunbarrel in CR is way too tight for any barrel.

Looks like we've established that yes, it was just for aesthetic appeal, and not based on any realistic groove pattern. It was part of the title sequence, just as a symbol. I'm sure that if gunbarrel sequences continue, it will go back to the Brosnan-style CG pattern.

That rifling on the CR "gun barrel" looks similar to a cannon rifling

So that's why Bond got so mad and killed the guy so brutally in the bathroom, the bad guy had been aiming a canon at Bond!!!

Seriously, my favorite bunbarel shots were Brosnan's first three, especially GE.
