Now lots of folks complain about how EON seems to canonize Cubby but do we have any proof that he was not a nice guy? Or at least not much nicer than your average producer?

The closest I have come to his "dark side" is his goings on with his cousin Pasquale "Pat" DiCicco who introduced him to the Hollywood set in the 1930s. Seems he was not a nice guy, being involved with the mob, prostitution and such (any wonder why Cubby put in the "delicatessen in stainless steel line"? ). He was also described as a "playboy" and an "agent". Pat married Gloria Vanderbilt and he beat her. He also married Thelma Todd and beat her too. Many people do not buy the story that Thelma Todd committed suicide and think she was murdered. Some, including Gloria, think Pat was the killer.

Oh and most importantly there was Ted Healy, former leader of The Three Stooges. He died in 1937, supposedly from a heart attack. There is also the story that he really died from a beating after a drunken altercation at a nightclub. There were three people who beat him up. One story goes that they were "college fellows." The other story goes that the three were Wallace Beery, Pat DiCicco and....Cubby Broccoli!

Hmm....I wonder if this explains why he liked Bond? We have sex, violence against women, criminal conspiracies, killing and sadism for the whole family! :cooltongue:

Plus his father imported broccoli.
The vegetable was named after him.

This is not true. His father might have imported broccoli, but it's not named after their family. Broccoli has been around (and named) for centuries and the word stems from a little Latin and Italian essentially meaning "branch" or "strong arm."

You describing Ian Fleming? If so, it fits the description. Except, you forgot adulterer, snob, racist, alcoholic and substance abuser.

How is that for a mafia name!
Louis Armstrong would be Luigi Broccoli in Italian, then?

Exactly. I've never met a businessman/businesswomen who wasn't either a bastard or a bitch. They always expect you to 'starve' whilst they're booking a table at an expensive restaurant. Although I'm a businessman myself, I'm far too easy going to have that 'killer' approach.

I'm not saying that Cubby was a 'bastard', but to be that successful he would have had to concentrate all his resources on the production. In other words he was 'in bed' with EON.

Yes. Shagging is part of being a bastard too. :cooltongue:

I think this conversation is getting a little libellous, is it not? (!).

My secondary experience of the man has been nothing short of benevolent, loyal and dedicated to both his business and his family.

It's an interesting thread, but not that necessary really.

I met Cubby on several occasions at Pinewood, at the Odeon Leicester Square and at Eon's former headquarters in South Audley Street. This does not add up to "knowing" him as such, but I can report that I never saw him anything less than courteous, helpful and benevolent.

As for being a bastard, I have to say I've met much biger bastards behind the counter at my bank.

When you look like Cubby did, and you get to wed Diana, you have to have a dark side. Women love the dark side.

We certainly do :cooltongue:
Surely we all have a dark side?
I'd say it's far more likely that Cubby was the same as most of us, no saint but not the devil either. Anyone who claims they don't have any dark side is talking out of their [censored]. Doesn't mean we all act on the dark impulses. Except for Darth Vader, obviously.

Speak for yourself. The sun shines out of my dark side. :cooltongue:
