I was watching a CNN documentary about the Cold War today, about the Marshall Plan to be specific and it stated (and was confirmed by a member of the then-Soviet party) that Ambassador Molotov was known as "Mister No" because it he had been called "Mister Yes", Stalin would not have approved of his job. :cooltongue:

Now considering the context of the Cold War, Fleming's job and inspiration, wouldn't it just be a tad logical for Dr. No's name to be inspired by this?

Of course, Molotov's name also inspired the infamous "Cocktail Molotov" and an explosive in a glass bottle is enough to leave anybody shaken and stirred!

Gala, I hate to correct you in public and I do hope our friendship survives this, but: "Molotov!" is an expression of cheer used at Jewish weddings.

Isn't it "mazel tov"? There definitely is such a thing as a molotov cocktail.

I know, I know. I was making a joke. My system bans emoticons. Just a little humor.

Don't know to who the touche is delt to at this point. Ah, pas de touche to all of us! :cooltongue: But I know that a Cocktail Molotov is an explosive. An article on the riots in France confirmed this to me and so did Drax.

Thank God you're not angry. My poor young heart was pounding. I thought I'd need a filibuster like the one in Dan Craig's car.

Dr. No was inspired by (Dr.) Fu Manchu. Of the name, Fleming once wrote "I've always been inclined to say no, it's a shorter word than yes and it commits you less." I think he was just looking for a short simple name like 'Dr. Fu.'

Interestingly enough, Fu Manchu was played by Christopher Lee sometime in the 60s. Lee is Fleming's cousin and as you are no doubt aware, he played Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun. So if you ever wanted to see what a possible Christopher Lee as Dr. Julius No would look like, go see The Face of Fu Manchu.

I had no idea Ian Fleming was related (it's step-cousin incidentally) to Christopher Lee.. very cool :D

That is quite interesting... So it was Dr. Fu Manchu that did it. And fascinating about Fleming and Lee being cousins, hee hee!

Dodge, seriously don't worry about it! You wouldn't need the filibuster at all!

Even though I still find the Molotov incident a bit tooooo creepy for words. Especially since he wasn't called "Mr. Yes" :cooltongue:

Some more Dr. No trivia about the name:
Maibaum had turned in a script in which the villain's name was Buckfield, and Dr. No was the name of the spider monkey who sat on his shoulder.
Cubby must have blown his top on seeing this draft.

My pet (and unsubstantiated) theory is that Fleming looked at his personal physician(s) in a negative light, always saying "no" to his intake of alchohol, tobacco, scrambled eggs, etc. I'd like to find out the real story behind the name. Just like with GF, my pet theory eventually was corroborated in some way when Mike Myers named Goldmember, but there's that whole other origins story of a real Erno Goldfinger who Fleming supposedly disliked.

I love the Goldfinger "fact", absolutely fascinating! :cooltongue: That just makes me think about my own Dr. No theory even more just cuz context-wise it makes perfect sense!
