I just watched Dr No again recently and Im a little confused about the ending...
My read on it is that Bond overloads the reactor and essentially causes a Chernobyl style nuclear meltdown, to save the lives of a few astronauts?
Wouldnt it have caused countless deaths and left the island uninhabitable? Dont think Bond really thought that one through...

He did it in order to cause one death, Dr No. Countless deaths of Dr No's followers, leaving Spectre's island uninhabitable, and saving NASA's rocket were just gravy.

Think about the time frame the movie was made in. We didn't have the knowledge of what a true nuclear disaster would be like. The reactor melts down? So what. I think only a few senior scientists knew what would happen. It was the activism of the 70's that made people aware of what a true melt down could do and then Chenobryl.

Depends on the type of reactor and the materials used to form radioactive substances. DN had a water reactor, and I noticed that Bond and Christmas Jones did not take very many protective practices upon entering the reactor in TWINE.

I know I always bring this up but, this is the same film where Bond gets cured of radiation poisoning with soap and hot water. By Dr. No logic all you needed to fix up Chernobyl was plenty of hot water and a damn good scrubbing.

Actually according to the CDC:
Tips before Entering a Shelter
"If you are outside when the alert is given, try to remove clothing and shoes and place them in a plastic bag before entering the house. During severe weather, such as extreme cold, remove at least the outer layer of clothes before entering the home to avoid bringing radioactive material into your shelter. Leave clothing and shoes outside. Shower and wash your body with soap and water. Removing clothing can eliminate up to 90% of radioactive contamination. By taking this simple step, you will reduce the time that you are exposed and also your risk of injury from the radiation."
But they also said crouching under a desk will keep you save during a nuclear blast
