Sucks that we were so right about Royale's Oscar potential - in that it doesn't matter how well it did, it won't get nominated. I mean I haven't seen every movie, but Casino Royale is honestly and without bias one of the best films of the year and not just in my own opinion; it's the highest reviewed wide release of the year. And yet it's still overlooked because it is Bond. It's most likely not going to get a nomination and it's no worse than The Departed (which I also loved) which most likely will. I am saddened by this, yet I also for whatever reason, understand. It's no surprise...

I really did think it might have a chance, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen now. Its not like there isn't precedent for 'popcorn' blockbusters to get Oscar attention...if The Fugitive and Sixth Sense can get best picture nods, and if Johnny Depp can get a Best Actor nod for his cartoonish performance, then I don't see why CR/Craig couldn't be in contention either. It is still one of the most critically supported movies of the year, and yet mediocre fare like 'The pursuit of Happyness' gets touted for Oscars, which just puzzles me completely, as it looks like any generic movie you'd see on Lifetime at 2pm on a Wednesday afternoon. I guess I will never really understand what the Oscars are about; critics and audiences have declared CR to be one of the best movies of the year, yet the Oscars ignore it. :P :)

Excellent article. Couldn't agree more.

And it sad that Bond won't get consideration for any major Oscar nominations, just because it's "Bond." The Academy needs to stop being such royal pricks and stop judging books by their covers.

Oh well, at least it will get attention at the BAFTA's. :)

I think Craig and Sacha Baron Cohen both richly deserve to be nominated for Best Actor. Now, perhaps neither truly deserves to win, but would the world really end if "the Academy" were to give them nominations? Still, I guess they're too busy being ultra-conservative and thinking of ways to pay tribute to Clint Eastwood.

As for Oscar nods, let's think of it this way. We have been extraordinarily blessed with a fantastic pic in CR. Maybe that blessing will continue when the awards season rolls around. Let's hope. Everyone deserves an award for CR but especially DC. I can't think of a more deserving actor. He's spent years toiling to perfect his craft and he uses it to bring an international folk hero back to life. Noble is what it is.

I'm thrilled to have been right, way back, about the box office take. But it may be time to admit defeat on my Oscar nomination predictions. Put your money on Scorcese, who's been angling and groveling for an Oscar now for decades. Shame on the Academy if they cave in to his tears. But anyway, CR's a winner, all of that aside. The critical acclaim and respect the film earned are more important in the end than a little statue. A new era has begun, indeed. And it's good to be among a crowd that's hip to Daniel Craig.

My prediction was in line, and that makes me sad;).

I really, however, honestly do believe Daniel deserves a nod.

I dont like the thought of CR winning the Best Picture oscar ,there would be too much expectation on the next film and on DC.

I agree with you on that, but I'd been predicting a nod. Even without it, however, the whole team will enter into Bond 22 like the winners and warriors they are.

Sadly it was not nominated, but I still thank you all here for posting my review.
