FYEO Fans only

I just wanted to start a thread about one of my favourite Bond movies, For your Eyes only.
If you're a fan of this movie, please add your comments here. This is a Moore-bashing-free zone.
I love this film - the PTS with the throwaway with Blofeld (yeah, it's him alright!), the scenes in Cortina - especially Bond's very caring chat with Melina on the carriage about spending time to grieve), the scenes in Greece, the cliff climb in Meteora at the end, it's all great and much more down-to-earth than the previous film, Moonraker.
It's a really visual Bond, with a realistic espionage plot.
Who else is a big fan of this understated Moore Bond movie?

Good to see some FYEO fans on here. I agree that Melina is a great Bond girl, and Bond does not sleep with her until the end.
There is also a very nice performance from Cassandra Harris, as Lisl, and great chemistry between Moore and Topol (as Colombo).
The only parts I don't like as much are:- Bibi Dahl (a little annoying), the parrot, and Margaret Thatcher - silly ending). Apart from those, I love it.

I also love Columbo. His "pistachio nuts" smuggling bit is great.

I also love Columbo
Me too. He is one of the great Bond allies, along similar lines to Kermi Bey and Draco.

So...anyway....
One just has to love the music in FYEO. Pure Bill Conti dying days of disco. You just can't stop comparing the score with Rocky in your head! Especially during the ski sequence, which is one of the very best in the series.
The dramatic element is quite refreshing here, especially after "Broccoli's Flying Moonraker Circus." From the very beginning, at the gravestone of Tracy (splendid touch), all the way to Gogol's random "let me show you the back of my hand" salute, the camp is significantly muted and the story remains compelling. Also, this film has some of the absolute best action sequences of Moore's tenure. The PTS reeks of tension (until Bond prevails). The ski sequence, as I said, is nearly second-to-none (still prefer OHMSS), the LALD "swim" is well adapted, the ATAC retrieval and the climb to St. Cyril's are wonderfully tense, and the warehouse scene lifted from the climax of Risico is very satisfying in the end. "You left this with Ferrara, I believe." One of Moore's top 3 moments. Add to that a wonderful girl in Melina, a refreshingly dramatic killing of the Havelocks, and Moore's Bond finally playing baccarat, and you've got a winner.
All in all, Moore's best, IMO.
If there were any weaknesses, I'd say they are these: The absence of M, in the only story that really personally involved him. I know why, but still unfortunate that the character was written out. Also, Blofeld. Glad to get closure, I suppose, but I really would have preferred not as light a touch as Moore's in the final disposal. And I could have gone without the Bibi subplot. Other than this, that's all I got!

Love it too. A wonderful thing about it is the way in which so many different locations and action scenes are combined at a breakneck speed, while employing great humor and great tension as well. For me, FYEO is one of the best balanced Bonds. It has got everything the Bond films are known and loved for, in a very tight and entertaining package.
Nicely put.
Also, 00Twelve, nice review too. I also think that the disposal of Blofeld could have been more angry, like the way Bond gets rid of Loque.

The ski scenes were also well filmed. A few years ago, I was in Lake Placid NY (home of the 1980 Winter Olympics) & got to go to the top of the 120 meter ski jump tower. As I was looking down it, from the jumper's perspective, I remember thinking to myself that you would have to be crazy to ski down this thing. So, when I see that scene in the movie, I have a whole new appreciation for the stunt people, camera people, etc, who made the scene a reality.
I love gadgets but I tend to gravitate to the movies that have a few less gadgets & a lot more plot -- FYEO hits the mark on both counts.

Yes, it was really nice and spectacular. Those cliffs with the monasteries were really weird - monks and nuns really live on those mountains, far away from everywhere. They need a pulley-system to even get food up there!
Yes, I have been to a few Bond locations - James Bond Island (TMWTGG), as well as Black Park, England (GF, CR), Brent Cross Shopping Centre, London (TND carpark chase), Venice, Paris, Bangkok, the door to the secret underground station from DAD in London, Berlin and Hamburg.

How do you afford to go to all these lovely places?
Well, I am British, and I used to live in England. It is certainly closer to these places than the US is, so that is one reason.
Another thing is that it seems it is cheaper to travel when you live in England. Most people leave home at 18, and either live somewhere else in the UK to study, or travel the world for 1 year.
I travelled around Asia and Australia for a year (working as I went) in 1999. Now I live in Australia. It was never too expensive to travel.
I loved seeing the Bond locations - check out my thread in the "Casino Royale" board, where I talk about "Real Locations".

I'm still no fan of the "delicatessen in stainless steel" line though!

FYEO is an excellent film. Conti's soundtrack is a completely different flavor of Bond, but it fits the movie nicely. Some of the best ski scenes from a series full of great ski scenes. Character development was top-notch; I hated seeing Ferrara come up dead, and always give my coffee table a good kick when Bond boots his killer off the cliff. Who could ask for a better ally than Columbo? That character gave a big nod to FRWL IMO. Melina is a beauty with brains and teams up nicely with Bond in her quest to avenge her parents - but contributes greatly to resolving the bigger picture.

The movies so well put together in my opinion i even like that line!

I also thought that the Blofeld thing shouldn't have been played for laughs. It wouldn't have worked with Roger choking him to death or anything, but something a little bit darker than throwing him down a smokestack of all things, would have sufficed.

This is one of my Top 5 of all the James Bond movies and is my second favorite of the Roger Moore era movies (running just a little behind The Spy Who Loved Me.
Although Barbara Bach is my favorite all-time Bond girl, it should come as no surprise to many CBNers who know my adoration for all things French that Carole Bouquet is a close second. She has the most amazing eyes and a smouldering sensuality that is simply mesmerizing.
